Gustav, Isobel & Imogen Holst and Vally Lasker. Mrs. Gustav Holst (2022). Church history and history of ideas, mostly Tudors and Huguenots. Next book Confidence: History of an idea from the 14th century to the present.

We marked the occasion yesterday by visiting the tapestry exhibition @britishmuseum.bsky.social. Despite the long queue once inside it is very moving to be able to see this great treasure laid flat and to appreciate the building sense of drama, including the tale of destruction in the bottom border.

#OTD 27 September 1066 William the Conqueror and his army set sail from the mouth of the Somme river, beginning the Norman conquest of England.

Born in Cheltenham #otd 1874 Gustav Holst, described by Ralph Vaughan Williams as ´a great composer, a great teacher and a great friend’. Here is his mother’s bedroom at Holst Victorian House - always worth visiting with super knowledgeable volunteer guides. There are special visits today.

My suggestion for an illustration for James Marriott’s important column in today’s @thetimes.com, which ends with highlighting the risks of overconfidence and arrogance. The French word outrecuidance never really took off in English. Perhaps it should now. Here is outrecuidance from The Cloisters NY

Colourful early 16th century tapestry entitled in English Vanity sounds the horn and ignorance unleashes the hounds overconfidence, rashness, and desire. The hound overconfidence (outrecuidance) looks directly at ignorance, who smiles sweetly back.

And here is nearby Skellig Michael 9 days ago, home between the 6th and 8th centuries to a small group of monks who lived in the individual “beehive” cells, some of the remains of which are just visible. An extraordinary insight into early monasticism. The gannets prefer Little Skellig.

The Irish Dames of the #Benedictine Abbey at Ypres, founded 1665, had strong #Jacobite links. Some of them attended James II’s funeral in 1701. This copy of the funeral oration is one of their few surviving treasures when their abbey was bombed in 1914. Since 1920 their home is at tranquil Kylemore.

Faded copy of a sermon published in 1703, yellowed with age.19th century castle built of light-coloured stone with turrets, against a hilly background covered with leafy trees. The castle is reflected in the lake in front of it.

All performances by Chineke! orchestra are an uplifting experience, but tonight’s BBCProms with Angel Blue was exceptional by their exceptional standards. Delighted also to spot this poster celebrating women conductors including pioneer Rosabel Watson who collaborated with #GustavHolst (of course).

Summer music in @rbgkew.bsky.social 1920s style. The trees at Kew Gardens were among Gustav Holst’s favourites and he liked to take friends and pupils there. Photo from Vally Lasker’s private collection, inscribed on the back, shows her fellow ‘scribes’ Helen Bidder and Nora Day with Holst (left).

France has had 3 historic heatwaves in a row this year. Unless humanity rapidly cuts emissions then this all-time hot year will be one of the coolest of our lives. Graph is a visual production of data from glacial scientist Dr. Shaun Marcott, 2013.

This is a fascinating and important discussion, highly recommended for anyone interested in history or ideas or books and essential if you’re interested in all three.
