A vertically rectangular print depicting a watermelon on a vine, on which sits a moth. A caterpillar crawls on the upper side of the watermelon rind. Some kind of egg sits near the top of the fruit, close to where it attaches to the vine. Elsewhere on the vine are two yellow flowers. A 3-color linocut still life of the fruits named in the artwork’s title. Honestly, to this American eye they look more like watermelon, cantaloupe and zucchini. The texture of the background mirrors the texture of the cantaloupe/pumpkin. Although this is a linocut on paper, the depiction of the fruits is textured in such a way as to give it a textile vibe.

A delicate rectangular, portrait-mode painting against a gold background of five pink hibiscus blossoms and leaves on stems that lean into the artwork from its right edge. There are two red stamps, one over the other, in the bottom left corner of the work. According to the museum's object page, “The hibiscus is called mufurong in Chinese and often used as a pun for ‘wealth’ (fu) and ‘glory’ (rong). Another name is ‘intoxicated hibiscus’ (zuijiu furong) because the pinkish white blossoms, which open early in the morning, turn crimson at night. One of nine flowers of autumn, the ancient name for the hibiscus was ‘resists frost’ (jushuang)."

"The little dog, likely a pug, occupies the center of the scene and seems to be gazing directly into the viewer’s eyes. She wears a simple collar with metal bells, suggesting an intimate and familiar atmosphere that reflects Vittoria della Rovere’s well-known passion for dogs — who was often portrayed in the company of her trusted four-legged friends, as evidenced by the presence of doghouses in nearly every room of the Poggio Imperiale in the late seventeenth century. The exquisitely refined cup—a Chinese “chicchera” contemporary with the painting (and thus very much in vogue)—stands out against the pink of the tablecloth, recalling the Medici custom of sipping hot chocolate and likely mirroring the similar porcelain pieces preserved in the room. This interplay of references is completed by the cookies—broken, nibbled, or in crumbs—and by the flies that seem to be feasting on the leftovers of a grand ducal snack: a rare balance between naturalism, domestic serenity, and courtly subtleties (I don’t think many of you would leave a precious Chinese cup next to a pet, let alone food) tinged with sweetness and enlivened by a delightful, playful, and intriguing inspiration. These are the characteristics we’ll find in nearly all of Garzoni’s work—or, at the very least, in her most successful and acclaimed pieces."
