My reaction is less kill me now and more oh that’s how the kid in the “is this real life” video felt.
I’m begging someone to shoot me in the back of the skull and put me out of this misery.

I mostly don't believe the AI existential risk hype (and am modestly upbeat that AI is a net positive). But, it sure would be nice if the framing of that debate could not so subtly shift from: "AI might kill us all" to "The people building AI might kill us all"

Just for the record, I went to at least one Hawks game when I lived in Atlanta. My favorite NBA team (San Antonio Spurs) was in town. Not exactly sure what year though. If I’m ever asked during a Congressional hearing, I’m more apt to answer correctly if framed as a Spurs game.
I just want to brag that I have seen the impossible -- someone replying to an academic listserv asking to be removed from said listserv without it turning into a reply-all free for all. Not a single additional reply! There is hope for us yet.
Southampton is an excellent intellectually vibrant department and @rikkidean.bsky.social is a fantastic scholar and supervisor/PI. Highly recommend!

While @faineg.com is obviously right that this is not the group ideally suited for supervising teenagers, I want to push back on an additional fundamental point. My strong view is that the SF techbro billionaire space is not in any way reflective of “real life” practically or intellectually.

How bad are the Spurs so this season? 20th in the table is, understatement, not great. But, are they relegation candidates? Probably not. For xG/xGA/xPTS, rank is ~15th. If Brentford game was an outlier (I think/hope it was), then considerably better for xGA (5th best) and xPTS (12th). xG ~16th
My football hot take of the weekend: Manchester United in blue uniforms is wrong and stupid.
My line-up for Spurs vs Villa, knowing I’m always wrong. Kinsky Porro JPvH VdV Udogie Bentancur Tonali Kudus Marmoush Savio Solanke Subs at 60’: Fernandes -> Bentancur Maddison -> Solanke (OM to 9) Subs at 75’: Robbo -> Udogie Gallagher -> Tonali Sub at 85’: Tel -> Kudus (Savio to rt)

AI apocalypse by movie analogy: What movie best represents your view of the AI overlord future? -Terminator -Matrix -I, Robot -2001 (HAL goes a little crazy) -Dr Strangelove (but with human errors replicated in AI systems and oops there goes the doomsday machine) -Other
TIL even the guy who wrote the book called "If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies" that everyone keeps talking about also isn't really sure what an AI apocalypse entails. It's the No. 1 news story in the country and no one can even detail what it is!
Alas, I have no expertise to share on Swedish coalition bargaining. But, I can share an article that focuses on a potentially related topic -- the extent to which election results affect perceptions of likely coalitions (using the 2021 German election). www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

What’s the record for the team with the most consecutive 0-0 PL draws?
This is bad enough at face value. But, there is an even worse interpretation that would keep the unionists happy (and actually seems more in keeping with Trump’s general worldview). Of course, it doesn’t mean either — it is someone who knows nothing just saying stuff.
Breaking: Donald Trump says “I’d love to see Ireland unified…. I think it would be a great thing. How could it be bad?” Oh my word.
I am going to Exeter FC vs Spurs U21 tonight. For those who know the youth teams better than I do, what/who should I look for? I’m aware of the players on the fringe of the first team — what else, if anything, should I pay attention to?
To all my political science friends (and future friends) in Boston -- I'm not going to be at APSA this year, so hello from a distance. Hopefully our paths will cross soon. I do have a question about the conference. Well, I guess it's actually more of a comment...
I like Brice’s thread. I have no idea how well these transfers are going to work out in 3 weeks, 3 months, and 3 years. Is Van Hecke better than peak Romero? Probably not. But, good chance Spurs will have Van Hecke for 30+ PL games. How many — between injury and suspension — would Romero get?
Anyone who thinks that Spurs had anything lower than a B-tier transfer window is an unserious person, sorry not sorry.

I have no idea how good/bad Adarabioyo is. But, data profile suggests positives (aerial, athleticism) that Spurs lack. £7m for backup seems reasonable. Mudryk on loan seems fine? xG+xA ~.45/90, albeit 3 years ago. He'll probably be a bust, but maybe not? He will have Spurs most punchable face.
Here are my thoughts on Spurs yesterday, in no particular order: 1) Losing sucks, but a 0-2 loss is not reflective of the game as a whole. Spurs held a slight advantage in xG (and that edge was probably more decisive in first half). A 1-1 draw would have fair.

If in the last few days of the transfer window Spurs bring in a 10, another winger, and a right back that would be an entire XI. I kinda want that to happen.
Well done to the university currently currently antagonizing their two main constituencies — staff (through financially unnecessary redundancies, primarily targeted at humanities, arts, and social sciences) and students (by accepting more students than there is housing for). 10/10, no notes.

If the Playboy article linked somewhere in repost is remotely true (and different from how real women behaved in the past—color me skeptical)…please fellow men, for the love of god, do not let the take home message be “I can score hot chicks so I will ‘up my game’” and become a scummy creep.
