A new study by @kunkakom.bsky.social, Jungherr and Rauchfleisch put this to the test. The idea: when a public agency hands a task to an algorithm, it is delegating. And every delegation comes with a leash question. 🦮 2/🧵

I was not reviewer 2. But I am so annoyed by Americans pretending the whole open science movement is funded by John Arnold. His investments are absolutely dwarfed by what the European Union and European science funders have invested in Open science. Only incredibly biased people would ignore this.

New paper with @adrauc.bsky.social and @ajungherr.bsky.social, published in @jeppjournal.bsky.social: How does the use of AI in government affect citizens’ sense of democratic control? Experimental evidence: greater efficiency can come with hidden legitimacy costs.
Just an enormous difference in Russian support for the war when comparing direct question estimates with experiments from list experiments. Also, peep those CIs! sensitivity bias has to be HUGE (which it apparently is in this case) to be detected with Direct - List
Every wave after that splits. Direct support holds at ~75%. Indirect support drops to 44–58%. The gap runs from 16 to 30 percentage points.

All those surprised by this should remember that, back in 2020, Politico already included Götz Kubitschek and Viktor Orbán among its "Dreamers" in its “Class of 2020“, an annual ranking of “the people shaping European politics and policy“.

Interesting paper on how publication metrics distort research effort. The author exploits a reform in Thailand in 2019, which nudges researchers to publish in Q1 rank journals. Bunching at the cutoff shows that researchers follow incentives, at the expense of quality docs.iza.org/dp18680.pdf

🚨 New preprint out! 🚨 We’ve spent years assuming liberals and conservatives prioritize fundamentally different moral values—and designing persuasive messages based on that assumption. Our data suggest there's more to the story, and that making that assumption can backfire.
Scientific progress is improving research practices. Preregistered large scale studies are now the highest quality evidence we can get in empirical research. So we should work hard on best practices for them (Red Teams, Methodological Review Boards, etc). We will always need to keep improving!
The emerging disenchantment with retrospective meta-analysis www.nature.com/articles/s41... Retrospective meta analysis lacks prior unobservability of data, hence all problems known from empirical research apply. Multilab preregistered studies are seen as best alternative.
