Shortly after reporting this a fourth wand was damaged. The maintenance team initially said they didn't meet the criteria for an urgent repair, but after local councillor Maxine Webb raised the issue with Tom Dickerson, the Cabinet member for Highways, they changed their mind...

Three (!!!) of the wands protecting the mandatory cycle lane on Newmarket Road have now been knocked over. Once one goes others soon follow. The wands are an essential part of the protected cycle lanes for preventing drivers from entering and parking in the cycle lane. Issue logged with Highways.

A mandatory cycle lane on a busy road. A red arrow marks the spot where a wand used to be.

Hethersett Lane is now "closed to traffic" until Christmas Eve while they build the cycle track. What they failed to mention is that there's still access for cyclists and pedestrians, which is useful as this is an important commuter route for people working at the hospital and the Research Park.

Barriers across a road with a "road closed" sign. However there is a path kept open down one side for cyclists and pedestrians.

The Mile Cross 20mph scheme was to be part of the Mile Cross Road cycle lane project - now paused pending future funding. Residents strongly favoured the 20mph scheme but it's under review by the new administration. Please sign the petition to show your support. actionnetwork.org/petitions/20...

20mph speed limits in Mile Cross

Perfect late summer weather for our social ride today out to Sprowston. Mostly riding on quiet streets or cycle tracks but we were badly let down by the mind-numbingly dangerous crossing on the Blue Boar Lane cycle track, where we instead walked our bikes to the garden centre for the coffee stop.

A group of people standing by their bikes outside the garden centre when we stopped for refreshments.

Barriers have now been removed from all eight earmarked locations on the city's Pedalways cycle network, including here on Marston Lane on the Purple Pedalway. All places where the gap has been increased to at least 1.5m to allow non-standard bikes such as cargo bikes to use the network.

Two bollards across a cycle path. There is a wide gap either side.A farm gate across a cycle path. There is a narrow gap on one side.

I'd just like to echo that. But you know what? No matter how we start, once car dominance and its privileges are under threat, things get brutal. Best regards from CARmany. I am receiving death threats because of my work, not willing to accept this as a "communication failure". It feels like "war".

I don't recommend this framing (although I'm sure he's well intentioned). Better to focus on the positive than the negative. Talk about reclaiming street space to add parks and outdoor cafes, or to ensure kids can play outside. People will smile. If you start with car restrictions, they'll scowl.
