Six of the Kansas supreme court's 7 sitting members were appointed by a Democratic governor, and 4 of them won’t hit the mandatory retirement age until the 2040s.

AP calls a DEFEAT for Kansas Amendment 1, which would have replaced the current merit-based selection of state Supreme Court justices with partisan statewide elections. GOP wanted this change to try to overturn a ruling protecting abortion rights, but voters emphatically said no.

It’s just the early vote and only for three counties, but the worst Trump did out of these three was 73%. Not a good sign for yes

It's a bummer. My logs say @ike-lab.com has gotten more than 100,000 unique visits this month. Our big election spike in 2024 was just under 5,000. The August primary is not getting 20x the attention. Also, there are a lot of 404s looking for WordPress files and directories, which IKE doesn't use.

There are big primaries for both parties, including for an open governor's seat. Maybe even bigger is a constitutional amendment to move the state supreme court from a merit/retention system to nonpartisan elections - Republicans are looking to push the court more conservative with the change.
