Who at #botany2026 is thinking about which talks to see tomorrow? Maybe I humbly recommend our talk on Physalis phylogenomics where we ask the question, why are there so many tomatillo species 50 million years after a (famous to Solanologists) bottleneck? Tomorrow 1:30pm in San Ignacio!

A while back I timidly knocked on a neighbor's door to ask if they would mind not pulling up the native Physalis in their side yard. They humored me as I explained why and got a little into the weeds, so to speak. Now this is the ICONIC sign they have posted on the fence behind the plants.

Sign reads: CU Boulder Research Site (unofficial). The site marked below with the orange and white flags is home to the northernmost known site of this wild tomatillo. It is part of the physalis family which is a nightshade. YOU CAN HELP THIS CU BOULDER + COMMUNITY RESEARCH ENDEAVOR. 1. Please take care around these plants (I know they look like weeds). In September you'll see tiny green tomatillos. 2. Do not allow dogs to pee on this area or near the orange flag one house over [yes they also recruited another neighbor] 3. Do not pick them, touch them, walk on them, etc. 4. Tell someone about research in the community!

'Beltsville Agricultural Research Centre', Maryland - I was privately commissioned to memorialise the BARC by a past employee after learning it will be shut down by the USDA after over 100 years of research. They wanted to focus of this aerial embroidery to be the field plots... 1/3 (see thread)
