I’m so proud of @laufran.bsky.social for the #botany2026 Cooley Award from @amsocplanttaxon.bsky.social for work that began as an undergrad in the #LagoLab and continued as a collab during her PhD. She showed that introgression influenced trait evolution in my fave clade, Neotropical bellflowers.

If you are planning for #Botany2027 and did or did not attend #Botany2026, fill out this form if you need childcare!! docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F... please!! This year there was no childcare and the nursing room is more a custodian closet without a lock, AC, water/sink+light goes off very 5 mins
Hey #Botany2026, mark your schedule for an amazing talk by Kelly González, postdoc in my research group on ecological niche modeling and whether riverweeds (Podostemaceae) care for anything other than river rapids!! Tomorrow at 2:15 pm at San Luis 1
Hey #Botany2026! I'll be presenting a new video series in the Education & Outreach session that might be of interest to the herbarium crowd 👀🌿 Come by San Luis 2 at 11:45!
Hey Botany! Come see my talk investigating whether polyploids have different patterns of flower evolution than diploids on Weds at 8:15am in San Xavier. Over 100 undergrads participated in this research! :) #PUIFTW #Botany2026 #PlantPeopleFTW
Major #Botany2026 FOMO, but the drive MA->OR starts this week. So, sharing from afar: I’m recruiting grad students for my new lab at OSU! Info: www.mckenzie-lab.org . We're going to have FUN with systematics, speciation genomics, methods, natural history, and more in North Am angiosperms. Reach out!
Better late than never to compile the #botany2026 talks from research done in the #LagoLab! Check out talks by @laufran.bsky.social, Aislinn Mumford, and @evoyeyo.bsky.social tomorrow, and @laymonstera.bsky.social on Tuesday!
My heart is full— I’m so grateful to be part of these brilliant scientists’ journeys into full realization of their capacity and career goals. They’re also just a really fun hang and my favorite group of people, the hands down best part of my job. #LagoLab #botany2026
Just a little drink with #LagoLab alums @laymonstera.bsky.social and @evoyeyo.bsky.social to kick off #Botany2026
🌵Botanists🌺 on the move: make sure to say to our 🦜ornithologist🦩 friends on their way to #AOS2026 when you pass them in the airport in route to #Botany2026! (The Baton Rouge airport could have been a @lsumns.bsky.social seminar audience early this morning 😅.)
Good news- the #LagoLab is at a steady state! Incoming grad student @ca-haus.bsky.social moved into Baton Rouge yesterday. He’ll be at #Botany2026 too! 🎉 Campbell will be the first grad student who doesn’t have any overlap with my first grad students. A true generational turnover 😭.
After seven fun, productive years as a #LagoLab PhD student, @laymonstera.bsky.social is off to a postdoc Berkeley with Sarah Kocher. I’m going to miss her but she’s so ready for her career ahead!! (We’d all be crying in this goodbye photo if we weren’t going to see her on Sunday at #botany2026 😅)
I can't make it to #Botany2026 this year, but I don't want to miss out on all the cool plant science being presented. I've made a starter pack to follow along from home (and to find more great botanists to follow year-round). Reply here to be added! go.bsky.app/HdDpDrW

Avocados come in 2 varieties - A-types start each day female and switch to male midday. B-types do the reverse. In work just published from the last chapter of my PhD, we show this system evolved 40+million yrs ago and is regulated by alleles of 1 transcription factor www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

From the abstract: “promoting a woman to Associate Professor increases female faculty by 1.5 members after 15 years, leads to six additional female PhD graduates over the following decade, and raises the number who subsequently remain in academia and reach tenured positions”
Fascinating paper on the progression of women in academia. 👩🏻🔬 ⚛️ 🧪 #AcademicSky docs.iza.org/dp18477.pdf?... Here's an excerpt from the conclusion:
The Careers in Botany Panel fills up every year, and #Botany2026 is no exception. The panel is at capacity, but we want to introduce the ten botanists giving their time to talk with students and postdocs about how they built their careers. Sunday, Aug 2, 3:30 to 5:00 pm
Do dogs need glasses? Most dogs have 20/75 vision, seeing at 20 feet what a human can see at 75 ft. Not great. But would they benefit from corrective lenses? The answer is: probably not. Let's talk about the good & bad of 'dog-o-vision'.
Smart Dog Wearing Glasses
Alt: Smart Dog Wearing Glasses: a black Labrador retriever (I think?) wearing a human pair of glasses suddenly reacts with alarm to something off-camera. It's in a generic home or apartment with tan carpet and white walls, with vertical blinds over a window.

Make sure everyone comments on this rule. I do think there may be some compromise here. Putting a time limit on the visa is not crazy, it’s the length that’s the problem. Make PhD 8 years, masters’ 4, and bachelor’s 6 with automatic extensions for OPT, and then it’s a much more reasonable rule.
Congrats we just made it impossible to come here for a PhD www.bostonglobe.com/2026/07/16/m...

Good morning. Today is the LAST DAY to comment on the proposed OMB rule that will, honestly, destroy science in the US. And it will do FAR MORE THAN THAT. www.theverge.com/science/9576...
The war against ‘woke’ could end US science as we know it
‘Everyone will be affected, not just scientists. Every community in the country.’

There are many comments up on the OMB rule but there are now many that claim to be in favor of the rule and they are well written and anonymous- claiming to be tenured professors worried about waste fraud and abuse. We need as many real, unique comments as possible that show how bad this rule is
There's an OMB rule change that would require political oversight of scientific grants, and could pull any that don't "reflect presidential priorities" Another country has tried this before! It was the USSR and it was called Lysenkoism. By @thsaey.bsky.social www.sciencenews.org/article/omb-...

Do it! Today!! Right now!! Check it off your to-do list ✅. Time is running out to comment on the OMB proposal which hollow out science in the US. You have until Monday but you won’t want to do it over the weekend- so do it now!!
Faculty/research colleagues, this form helped me to draft a personal comment in 5 minutes and also appreciate how terrible this OMB proposal is for educational & measurement research. Comments due by 7/13, please sign on. ombcomment.netlify.app?link_id=5&ca... www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...
