I really f**king love Hong Kong, and Funassyi! Bluesky user #55,617 -- joined in May 2023! -- but am also "over there" too. Yes, I'm still straddling between Twitter and here (because there still are not enough Hongkongers and Funassyi fans here!).

People on Bluesky (okay, Japanese accounts whose posts pop up on @xunlingau.bsky.social's Funassyi feed): "I wonder what happened to Funassyi. It seems it's not active anymore." Meanwhile, an e.g. over on Twitter: Announcement of a pop-up Funassyiland opening in Nagoya tomorrow, complete with pic.

On a Japanese film(maker) note: Back in January 2020, Funassyi appeared on a TV talk show on the same day as Yoji Yamada. A Nashitomo (Pear Friend) was inspired by this to produce this art work of the Pear (Fairy) as Yoji Yamada's Tora-san! 😍

🧵 Film fans often talk about the three great(est) Japanese filmmakers as Akira Kurosawa, Kenji Mizoguchi and Yasujiro Ozu. But I also love Keisuke Kinoshita's films -- and, as it so happens, my favourite films starring Hideko Takamine are actually not by Mizoguchi or Naruse but, rather, Kinoshita...

This is how journalism that picks up a narrative from govt sources and other media end up misrepresenting reality to readers. This says charges are for “protests against the death penalty” which, w/o context, paints a diff picture from what actually happened. www.independent.co.uk/asia/southea...

Keisuke Kinoshita fue una de las grandes figuras del cine japonés de posguerra y autor de una de las filmografías más libres y singulares de la época. El mes de octubre #filmotecacat y #fundacionjapon ofrecen un ciclo con sus películas más representativas

Rob's theme for #BirdOfTheDay is #BestOFTheMonth. Oriental magpies are a common sight in Hong Kong but I generally spot them on the ground rather than up in a tree. And this one seemed to have an unusually long tail -- which was what drew my attention to it!

Rob's theme for #BirdOfTheDay is #BestOFTheMonth. I had a brilliant trip to Singapore and Sydney this month. Plus I got to have the best view of a Tawny Owl near my house. #TawnyOwl #AshyTailorbird #AsianOpenbill #RufousWoodpecker #NoisyMiner #RainbowLorikeet #SulphurCrestedCockatoo

Even in late September 2019, many Hong Kong protestors still believed in non-violent, peaceful protest. Or, at the very least, were willing to give it a try. Sadly, the police were more pro-violence. In nearby areas that day, the police fired tear gas at -- and otherwise attacked -- protestors.

I wore this shirt to the State Courts for my court mention for one count of "taking part in a public assembly within a prohibited area". Security wouldn't let me into the building wearing it. I ultimately took it off by the entrance and turned it inside out before I was allowed in.

Remember how the Feds and university sprung into action to expel non-violent protestors in 2024? That happened at precisely the same time these men were engaging in actual monstrous behavior against other students, with most getting a slight rap on the knuckles as punishment.
