I am once again begging people, *especially* on the left, to engage with the complicated realities of China rather than make up a version in your head to bash what you dislike in the United States.

On that point, one notes how the Trump admin has basically just obliterated US soft power. I don't think it really understands how soft power may, in fact, be a key part of why lesser powers are willing to subordinate themselves to a hegemon that reassures in this way

my feeling on this is that any system is going to have a certain number of grifters and you just have to accept that it is far more important to help deserving people than to not help undeserving ones. you can do your best but gatekeeping is generally much crueler than needed.

So while I generally agree with this, this is where controversy is created because any definition of “unable to work” might exclude people who have social media access and can post curated sob stories about it. I feel like we can’t just take people at their word, hell if we did I wouldn’t work.

One thing to add: much of the evidence detailing police complicity in the attacks appeared in two documentaries produced by public broadcaster RTHK. The govt fixed that by arresting the producer, Bao Choy, and ensuring that RTHK's editorial independence was removed and its archives deleted. 1/3
