The summer edition is out, the-context.com, with a focus on #security. I contributed a piece on #foodsecurity ... globally we are still producing more calories per person year on year, but our food systems are feeling increasingly insecure.

We are launching The Context Summer edition in the next couple of weeks and we’ve got some big names in it. Vince Cable, @profejzrobinson.bsky.social, @andrewdwyer.bsky.social, Adel Darwish, Nishiha Jasper David, Pelle Neroth Taylor and many more. We are also looking for ads for the next issue!

Small island developing states are particularly vulnerable to climate change. Lots written on existential threats from sea level rise. In the 2025 @lancetcountdown.bsky.social #SIDS report, we highlight the food security challenge: inc. high import dependency & increasingly disrupted supply chains

1/n In the 2025 @lancetcountdown.bsky.social #SIDS report, Prof @profejzrobinson.bsky.social & I track the impact of increasing frequency of #heatwaves & #droughts on access to food, through impact on crop yields, disrupted supply chains & price stability. #CMCC @granthamlse.bsky.social

Protected should mean protected. Across Europe, Marine Protected Areas are meant to safeguard some of our most important marine ecosystems. Yet destructive bottom trawling continues in many of them. Learn more about what the The MPA Legal Coalition is doing about it. 👉 mpa-legal-coalition.org

There is a proliferation of SUVs - not only are they more dangerous for pedestrians in crash but they emit more particle pollution from their fuel & their heavy weight means more dangerous brake & tyre particulate waste plus prevalence of pavement parking forcing pedestrians onto the rd…

‘Carspreading’ could lead to extra 2,600 crash deaths a year by 2040, study finds

Analysis shows cars in Europe have grown longer, taller and wider every year since 2000

Greenhouse gas emissions, primarily from burning fossil fuels, have already made every summer and every heatwave hotter than they would have been in a world without those emissions. Imagine if the @metoffice.gov.uk were brave enough to say something like that to the media every heatwave?

The rise of larger vehicles like SUVs and pickup trucks, with their taller hoods and larger blind zones, has contributed to a 75% increase in pedestrian and cyclist deaths since 2009. Until we design better streets and ban these vehicles, people outside these vehicles will keep dying.

The vehicles on American roads have grown larger — and they are killing thousands more pedestrians, a Times investigation found.

🚨 New research by us! 📣 Most British drivers don't know how dangerous SUVs are to other road users, but adding information to SUV marketing materials seems to do almost nothing to change people's plans to buy SUVs Here's a 🧵 on why harder action is going to be needed 1/10

Access to sufficient nutritious food is already made harder by climate change, & will get worse in the future. Agrifood systems account for approx 1/3 GHG emissions, so we need a rapid transition to low carbon diets plus greater efforts to adapt & build resilience. @countdowneurope.bsky.social

1/n In the 2026 @countdowneurope.bsky.social, @profejzrobinson.bsky.social & I track the impact of higher frequency of #heatwaves & #droughts on access to food. Compared to 1981–2010 baseline, these changes resulted in an estimated additional one million people being food insecure in 2023.

Over 40% of global shipping by volume exists to move fossil fuels from one place to another. A huge share of the world's maritime infrastructure has been built around a system that is going to change dramatically as renewable energy and electrification displace fossil fuels.
