This is an important point. While some hard limits (cannot be overcome by any means) to adaptation might be identified through biophysical research, identifying most hard limits and all soft limits (we hit because we choose not to do things that are needed) requires actually trying to adapt.

Meade Krosby@meadekrosby.bsky.social · 3d ago

This is also, tangentially, a response to those saying we’re already seeing the limits of adaptation. No, we’re not. We’ve barely begun to adapt. And that’s being generous. Adaptation has limits - and they’ll vary by system - but we won’t reach them until we genuinely mobilize to reduce risk.

I disagree with this a bit: youth sports went to hell when parents were sold on the idea that professionalizing their children would make them viable college athletes. In admissions, kids/parents drive this far more than colleges. (Informed by my experience as a college athlete/dean/dad/coach)

Snowden St.@snowden.st · 4w ago

if i can offer a heterodox-but-informed opinion— youth sports have gotten worse as they have become an even bigger part of the College Admissions circus. This, in turn, has ramped our Toxic Sports Parents problem up to 11.

While I agree that the conversion of Balogun’s red card suspension into a probationary period is shaky at best, I grow weary of the use of “unprecedented” to describe it. FIFA did the same thing for Ronaldo to let him play the opener in the group stages. Where was the UEFA/global outrage then?

A lot of the “Trump got Balogun a pardon” reporting seems rather credulous. I’d believe Trump made a call. But organizing a team of lawyers? To do what, exactly? I’d love a lot more sourcing…

Folks, this is just FIFA being FIFA. Staggering incompetence at many levels, but hard to see US-led corruption here. Balogun is a beneficiary of birthright citizenship and everything Trump et al hate. If this was Pulisic, on the other hand…

Thank you to The Poetry Shop for partnering with me to raise awareness about migraine, an often invisible neurological disease that impacts 1 in 6 households in the US. The Poetry Shop is donating 15% of sales of HEMICRANIA in June to @milesformigraine.bsky.social, as am I (dm for signed copy) 🧠💜

A lot of acronyms here but this is important #sustainability work and @edwardrcarr.com's work on climate-reslient development (IPCC lead in AR6) makes him perfect for the task. See our IPCC AR6 discussion below with @fisherdanar.bsky.social & @avastmachine.bsky.social.

This is shocking, deeply saddening news. I knew Raúl mostly online, but the one time we overlapped at an Association of American Geographers meeting he ran up to me and gave me a hug. Just a lovely guy dedicated to helping people do good work…

Lisa was one of the CLA’s for my chapter in AR6, and she is right on here. She speaks from experience because AR6 was affected by COVID and the last authors’ meeting virtual. It did not go well and it was hard to engage in the homestretch of the report. In person is not ideal but it is critical.

Prof Lisa Schipper 🌍🍉💪@lisaschipper.bsky.social · 3mo ago

Aaron. I understand your worries and I agree of the crappy signals this sends but given that all the authors are volunteers, who almost all have other fulltime jobs, the many different time zones, and the many conversations that are necessary, online author meetings simply do not work.
