Norfolk birder usually found patching or volunteering in the Mid-Yare Valley (TG40). Views are my own.
A top morning of visible migration on patch at RSPB Strumpshaw Fen. Totals from 7am to c11.30am included a Hawfinch, 8835 Redwing, 416 Fieldfare, 38 Brambling, 2 Redpoll and 40+ Reed Bunting. Bonus 2 Crane flew high over towards Norwich too. #NorfolkBirding 🍂
Who knows what this Grey-headed Swamphen's origin story is, but nevertheless, certainly a charismatic bird in entertaining circumstances and at an intriguing location. So many questions! Worth the little detour off patch to Great Yarmouth docks. #NorfolkBirding
Still spaces available on my Migration Watch event at RSPB Strumpshaw Fen next month (events.rspb.org.uk/events/174802). Last year, we picked up hundreds of Redwing, Fieldfare and more. Why not come and join us for some autumn migration action on Norwich's doorstep? #NorfolkBirding

A fantastic two days at NWT Cley over the weekend. A big arrival of juv Little Stint (20+ over the reserve), plus a mystery 'small grey' stint sp. had our heads spinning (adult little or something rarer?). A juv Hen Harrier that rushed through a couple of times got the heart racing. #NorfolkBirding
What a day! Started at Warham Greens where @jakegearty.bsky.social and I found a stunning Wood Warbler! Then to Blakeney Pt in the afternoon for a proper fall! Birds everywhere (50 Pied Fly, 20 Whinchat, 15 Redstart, 6 Tree Pipit) with 2 Wryneck and a Melodious Warbler headlining. 🤯 #NorfolkBirding
A pair of Pallid Harrier has bred in France's Nord department for the first time, providing another indication of the species' continuing westward shift in Europe – and bringing this increasingly familiar rarity closer to Britain:

A first breeding record in the Nord department adds to a recent run of colonisation attempts in Western Europe.

Fantastic day of birding in the Cley square, well worth the 4am alarm! Four skua species (including a LT and a Pom) on a morning seawatch, then later around the wetlands, 2 Garganey, 2 Glossy Ibis, Wood Sand, Curlew Sand, Little Stint and a Southern Migrant Hawker! #NorfolkBirding
It's hard to resist lifting the camera when a Kingfisher shows this well! They've been giving quality views from RSPB Strumpshaw Fen reception and fen hides this week. #NorfolkBirding

Always a pleasure to discover a patch Whinchat! This one at RSPB Strumpshaw Fen was the first of a few seen in the mid-Yare Valley today. #NorfolkBirding 🍂
A few highlights from a recent visit to Cantley Beet Factory. Great to see the Crane family from Strumpshaw thriving there, plus two Whimbrel and lots of Lesser Emperor Dragonfly. The Cattle Egret flock there has reached over 40! #NorfolkBirding
Exciting news breaking this morning! Zitting Cisticola has bred successfully in Britain for a second consecutive year, with at least seven juveniles from three broods recorded at Walberswick NNR, Suffolk, this summer:

A great little venture out to RSPB Snettisham last weekend where this White-rumped Sandpiper showed well once picked out from the thousands of Dunlin on site. #NorfolkBirding
A rather cool experience on an evening sea-watch (in a cold easterly breeze) at Winterton Dunes yesterday. Saw a flock of 5 Black Tern passing south only to be harassed by a pale morph Arctic Skua, forcing them to circle upwards and back out to sea until I couldn't see them anymore! #NorfolkBirding
Eurasian Bittern has bred in Dorset this summer for the first time in more than 140 years: https://f.mtr.cool/rbxtyhtocy

A Hudsonian Godwit within an hour of home, yes please! Got there with little time to spare before it seemingly departed RSPB Minsmere (for now) - my first British tick of 2026. Loads of bonus birds too including 2 Roseate Tern, Arctic Tern, 11 Spotted Redshank and more. #SuffolkBirding #UKBIRDING 🤩

Excellent views of the patch Crane family and a drake Garganey in the same scope view at one point. RSPB Strumpshaw Fen remains my favourite place to be! #NorfolkBirding #UKbirding
A few highlights from the mid-Yare Valley (and nearby) so far this spring, including an arboreal Black Redstart, some stunning Black Tern, a drake Garganey and great views of Bittern. A flock of 8 Wood Sandpiper at Strumpshaw Fen was excellent too. Just need that rarity next! 🤞 #NorfolkBirding
Thanks to the fantastic guided walk at Strumpshaw Fen last week by @djlbirding.bsky.social for getting my ears in Garden Warbler song. Left me suspecting we had one singing in the bushes opposite the house, among all the Blackcap activity. Picked one out by sound, and then sight at 5am this morning
It's Swallowtail season soon! I'll be leading walks at the fantastic RSPB Strumpshaw Fen in celebration of it's 50th year of being open to the public, in hope of spotting these plus lots of other scarce wildlife of the area. #UKButterflies #UKBirding ➡️ Book here: events.rspb.org.uk/browse?filte...
Great to get in on the Bar-tailed Godwit movement taking place across the UK this morning, with one (then shortly joined by another four!) at RSPB Cantley Marshes. #NorfolkBirding
Some spectacularly colourful invertebrates from Taiwan over the last couple of weeks! If anyone can ID the butterfly from the 400+ species found there, that would be great. 😄🇹🇼
