US Immigration and Customs Enforcement is looking to buy a warehouse in Hanover County and convert it into an immigrant processing facility. The move comes amid increasing ICE activity in Virginia, including an uptick around Democratic Gov. Abigail Spanberger's inauguration last week.

FEMA has declared a state of emergency in Virginia ahead of the storm. "We are able to receive direct federal supplies where necessary for the purposes of health, health and safety of our fellow Virginians," Gov. Abigail Spanberger said.

Despite what a post said on the Charlottesville subreddit, a local Waffle House will be open through the winter storm. Shelley Herring, who works in customer service at the location, said the restaurant will be open this weekend. “We are nonstop, 24/7,” Herring told VPM News on Friday.

Virginia public media stations brace for impact of federal funding cuts

Congress will claw back $1.1B from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. VPM, which is a PBS and NPR affiliate, will lose more than $2.5M over the next two years in lost funds. VPM President Jayme Swain says the cuts could result in the loss of Central Virginia local programming.

A spokesperson for VPM Media Corp. told VPM News that VPM had received $75,000 for the federal fiscal year running from Oct. 1, 2024–Sept. 30, 2025, but it was not yet clear how much of that money was still left to spend as of Friday, May 2 — the effective termination date of the grant.
