It comes from the PIE root *áryas, which meant "noble", and was probably used as an autonym, in some form, by Pontic Steppe derived aristocracies all over Eurasia. It's a controvertial subject and modern etymologists will deny it, but the Proto-Germanic "Abala", the Irish "Éire" and the Greek "Aristos", all meaning "noble", are probably all related to the PIE "*áryas". It was a word that referred to a single ethnic ruling caste that dominated many societies, it basically meant the same as the modern European concept of aristocracy (most European aristocratic lines descend from Germanic equestrian conquerers).
