A new #reformazing metaphor has just dropped in the fever swamps of the online right. Apparently universities are the latest iteration of the Tudor monasteries, and therefore some metaphorical Henry VIII must dissolve them. Let's parse this a bit. 1/n

Protestant Antwerpers were given the choice of converting to Catholicism or leaving the city in 4 years. 1000s chose the latter and migrated to the Protestant north. The capture of Antwerp was a major initial event in the recatholicization of the southern Netherlands. #reformationinthelowcountries

#OTD in 1585, Antwerp, once Europe’s premier economic hub, surrendered after a 1 year siege during the revolt against the rule of Philip II. Antwerp became the de facto capital of the revolt, but was now back in the hands of the Habsburgs.
