On June 23 1915 the Italians launch the first offensive on the Isonzo River. Spoiler: It will not be the last. The Italians enjoyed a 2:1 superiority in troops and gained some initial success. Repeated frontal assaults could not dislodge the Austro-Hungarians from strong uphill defensive positions.

Basil Rathbone, THE greatest Sherlock Holmes, served in WW1. He started as a Private in the London Scottish Regiment, ultimately serving as an Intelligence Officer for the King's Liverpool Regiment (Liverpool Scottish). Received the Military Cross in 1918. Became a legend in feature films and TV.

There are (at least) 2 liberal responses to the Nowak murder: 1. No, there are no considerations of race in policing. 2. Yes there are considerations of race precisely because of the history of the police and racism. I worry we're going for the first, and the populists have liberals on the run.

The Right talk about 'two-tier policing' in the context of police training which considers in greater depth the rights of black/ethnic minorities. One might say, 'Well yes....and?' This has been the case for decades for good reason: black people have faced huge discrimination from the start.
