"hmm maybe this whole Arday affair shows that we need to have a Serious Conversation about whether Woke 1.0 overreached in manner X, Y, of Z" motherfucker you are generally in Fascism 487.0, as is this particular affair you're talking about. worry about *that*. /Final

Amid the rush to burn DEI infrastructure to the ground, it’s worth remembering that the goal was never favoritism. It was a fair shot for people long excluded by unconscious or real bias — prominent scientists, including Nobel laureates, openly argued some “races” were innately unsuited for science.

The last 2 years have been disturbingly clarifying, scientifically, politically and organizationally. I have had to focus on what I have control over: organizing at my uni, ensuring the success of trainees in my lab and acknowledging that my approach to research may not align with future funding

US scientists: Going into fall 26, how are you thinking about things? Following Fall 24 events and a tumultuous spring 25, I remember a convo with a colleague in which we agreed we just needed to wait things out until fall 25 and we'd have some clarity about the landscape (eg for funding). /1

One more from mouse 🧠 for #FluorescenceFriday because I AM IN LOVE with that green neuron up top. These are virally labeled projection neurons in prelimbic cortex headed to either the locus coeruleus or the ventral tegmental area. Brought to you by RA Daniel Olivares and the LIBD circuits team.

Fluorescence microscopy image of mouse brain tissue in the cortex with neurons labeled with viral tracers in red or green.

It's sad that things have gone this far, but these are important conversations for Canadian science. IMHO, the quality of virtual reviews eroded over time (I was a regular on one panel). I feel CIHR should do what they can to get researchers back in rooms together.

Due to my role at the Terry Fox Research Institute I no longer comment publically on CIHR but this largest funder of Canadian health research made an important statement today: cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/54795.html and I can’t just watch this beloved agency crash.

For some reason, I wore all green today, and every time I walk into a room I want to say "Hi-Ho, Kermit the frog, here!" and my word this is turning into a looooong day!

“You’re not seen as middle age, you’re seen as old, whereas your comparable male counterpart is seen as in his prime time,” @amydiehl.bsky.social said about the gendered ageism that women ages 40-60 can face.

As I told @monicatorrr.bsky.social of @huffpost.com, "As [women] grow older and more mature in their careers, they lose some of the fear of speaking their mind. And certain men don’t like that." www.huffpost.com/entry/age-di...

I am excited to announce that I have opened my own lab at SMU in Dallas, Texas! We are studying questions surrounding how our environment shapes social interactions across lifespan using aggression across sexes in Drosophila as a model. (Photos are of SMU's Dallas Hall and the view from my office)
