The riot police in question, the dystopianly name Compagnies Républicaines de Sécurité (CRS), have always been paramilitary. Technically under civilian control, they are a national force, living under barracks conditions and equipped to “defend the Republic” against its own citiizens

The French police are so militarized they blew up a 15-yr-old’s hand and took the eye of another one. Why are grenades being used to quell student protestors who are unarmed? Now the labour unions are stepping in to protect the students

People keep thinking they can automate the type of admin work often done by women... bc they think their institution is a machine and not a brain. They think it can be recreated as a set of tasks executed w/ rules, and that we can skip the parts relying on relationships, memory, and judgment.

“Universities must stop falling in love with every new piece of software … that the tech industry pitches as essential. Administrators spend on software as if it is a durable investment, when all of the evidence shows that it … makes bloat worse.” globecollegetown.substack.com/p/higher-ed-...

“We can learn how to spot and confront these agents of influence by using the tools and techniques of the intelligence officer.” We could also teach people how to read. Real books. On paper. We reach for the most unnecessary analogies and solutions when the answer is simply, fund the humanities.

The number of dangers and the amount of work AI is already causing and will cause us is astounding. Yet we keep getting advice on how to make it work for us. FU if that is your advice.

Given the prevalence of AI, I will no longer accept electronic submissions in this course. Students must write their essays longhand on fine parchment, in fraktur, and enclose them in a small matching envelope tied with a silk ribbon and stamped with the wax seal of their family.

if more people become monolingual, they won't be able to evaluate the translation job and will accept the resulting mediocrity and error rate. then times this by everything AI will "work" by eliminating the underlying competing knowledge base.

People are being weird about modality lately. If I tell you, a colleague, that I am happy to have a quick phone call, you don't get to turn around and insist that I walk across campus to your office to meet you in person. You are a colleague, not a titled lord who summons subjects at will
