@johannawagstaffe.bsky.social at @cbcnews-rss.bsky.social made this really cool short video on our #thirstwaves work. youtu.be/5nmpXKu49II

Earth’s atmosphere is getting thirstier. New research from @agrohydrology.bsky.social & Mike Hobbins explores how this thirst is affecting crops. eos.org/research-spo...
“Thirstwaves” Are Growing More Common Across the United States - Eos
Like heat waves, these periods of high atmospheric demand for water can damage crops and ecosystems and increase pressure on water resources. New research shows they’re becoming more severe.

Hydrology Paper of the Day @agrohydrology.bsky.social on the novel concept of thirstwaves: the standardized reference evapotranspiration must be greater than the 90th percentile of this measurement at a site for a period of three days; mapping thirstwave spatial patterns; and decadal trends.
Thirstwaves: Prolonged Periods of Agricultural Exposure to Extreme Atmospheric Evaporative Demand for Water
Regional hotspots of thirstwaves do not necessarily align with areas of high overall evaporative demand Intensity, duration, and frequency of thirstwaves have increased significantly (p < 0.05) o...

Water use measurements on commercial sod (turf) production field underway in #treasurevalley #Idaho. Thanks to @uidaho and our grower cooperators.
Ready to answer some interesting hypothesis at our three new flux sites in the #MagicValley of Idaho. Thanks for the funding from ID Department of Water Resources.
New article by Kukal and Hobbins: An analysis of "thirstwaves", which are analogous to heatwaves but use reference ET instead of temperature. They are increasing in frequency, intensity, and duration across much of the contigous US. #climate #drought
