American Writers Museum

Our mission is to excite audiences about the impact of American writers—past, present, & future—in shaping our collective histories, identities, & daily lives.

Today, July 16, marks Ida B. Wells’ 164th birthday! Born in 1862 into slavery, Wells was a journalist and activist who fought for racial and gender equality, most notably documenting and fighting against lynchings in the American South. When you visit, you can find her in our Chicago Gallery!

Join New Trier Multifaith Alliance & the AWM at the Baha’i temple on July 26 from 2-3:30 for a FREE discussion based on our exhibit, American Prophets. AWM President Carey Cranston and a panel of authors explore the profound ways writing reflects and influences our understanding of religion.
