The debate has flared up again over whether chatbots are conscious. Which brings to mind this section of dialogue in my most recent book, This Machine Kills Billionaires (2026):

Excerpt reads as follows:

โ€œSergey Bookman says thatโ€™s speciesist. Heโ€™s been telling everyone whoโ€™ll listen which is everyoneโ€”that youโ€™re alive.โ€
โ€œWell he would say that, wouldnโ€™t he?โ€
โ€œHmm. Why?โ€
โ€œWho benefits from insisting that the toaster is sentient, Izzy? Why, the man with the toaster factory.โ€ Huldo gestured at the space around them, the vista. โ€œEven if I were a new form of life, Sergey Bookman would not care for me. Bookman does not care for any form of life, including human. His concerns are all instrumental.โ€

Few humanist authors are as well known as Salman Rushdie, who in 1989 was sentenced to death by a fatwa issued by Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini over his novel The Satanic Verses, and in 2022 was stabbed on stage at a lecture in New York. He is our patron, and one of our heroes. #Humanistbookshelf

โ€˜Nobody has the right to not be offended...If you are offended it is your problem, and frankly lots of things offend lots of people. I can walk into a bookshop and point out a number of books that I find very unattractive in what they say. But it doesn't occur to me to burn the bookshop down. If you don't like a book, read another book. If you start reading a book and you decide you don't like it, nobody is telling you to finish it.โ€™

On 5 September, hundreds of men in balaclavas blockaded Dover. The next day, Portsmouth. As they did it, they chanted 'Christ is King'. Their leader says the tactics came from paramilitary-style groups in Northern Ireland. It is funded through an American Christian crowdfunding site.
