“End of the Lutheran chronicle. This book is not worth reading. The quarrels of the vile Luther — suspicious of heresy.” This inscription in a copy of Marcin Bielski’s “Kronika tho iest historya swiata“ (Cracow,1564) absolutely made my day. Early modern readers: never shy with opinions!

This vignette has it all. It's February 1595/6 and Richard Bancroft (yes that Richard Bancroft) is at Fishmongers' Hall about a 'mishapp' over a lease of a property in Pudding Lane. It transpired that 'a mowse hath eaten of the Seale of the Lease' and could he please have another one. 1/2

This prosthetic eye made from a mixture of natural tar and animal fat is nearly 5,000 years old. It was found near the city of Zabol in Iran in 2006. Archaeologists believe that the prosthetic eye, which was once painted gold, was worn by an ancient priestess who stood 6’ tall.
