There is no way Dire Machines will ever be scary due to our evolutionary history as simpler creatures. Machines are just too new to be afraid of- eyes or not. You need the Uncanny valley, the darkness of isolation, diseases, gnashing teeth, rape, or other ancient ques humans universally understand.
Best advice I ever got in this vein was look at your favorite illustrators and artists then figure out who they were looking at for inspiration, then figure out who THEY were looking at, then pull your references and inspo from those artists. This lack of diving deeper is a problem everywhere sadly
