I do words. Canadian, so… funny-ish? Victoria, BC. Foodie. Oxford commas. Anti-Nazi. Antifa. Pro-science. Once sold everything to play nomad for 4+ years & 25 countries. Worth it. She/her. Loathe rage-bait. Team FuckYou/MakeMe. Free Palestine. AuDHD.

ICYMI over the long weekend, my column on the No Jets win. Inspired a bit by some Liberal MP taking an undeserved victory lap when they aren't covered in glory. That, and I don't totally trusts their long term sincerity on all this. It was the people's victory, no one else.

🛩️ v 🏖️ People who aren’t used to winning, won. At the same time, people who often win lost for once. The losers are throwing tantrums. Winners should take the win to heart because it truly belongs to them & no one else. My column on this remarkable grassroots mobilization in @thestar.com

AQI in #yyj is now up to 155 up in Saanich and over 100 in Oak Bay, and winds are coming from the east, so it wildfire smoke should continue throughout the night. Up until 2013, I’d never even seen wildfire smoke on the south coast. Now it’s almost a regular seasonal occurrence. Climate change.

Most of BC is experiencing far worse wildfire smoke, not to mention all the homes and businesses burned and lives disrupted by evacuations. Wildfires are becoming more and more severe due to fossil fuels like oil and gas (LNG). Talk about it when discussing the bit of smoke in #yyj

Air quality at sea level is holding at “moderate risk” while anything over 100m or so above sea level is hitting “very high” AQI, at 105 in James Bay… But wind has changed direction, from the east, & over the mountains across the sea, it’s nearly 200 AQI. Air is projected to worsen today, #yyj.

LOL! Yeah, no one is doing anything against AI? There are so many ways people are fighting AI. People are “poisoning data” to corrupt models & create public mistrust & AI-capital expense. (See map as example.) They’re fighting data centres, speaking up at town halls. They’re in the streets!

I see more post chastising parts of the left for ignoring AI. I don't know anyone who is ignoring it. I see people fighting against it and trying to bring attention to the harm it causes. I am very against this characterization that we're all sitting around with our fingers in ears. 1/

Watching Somebody Somewhere makes me feel like eating something ridiculously “blue collar,” and I JUST REALIZED that I saved all the drippings from my roasted chicken this week but never made gravy… and I CAN MAKE GRAVY. Chicken? Biscuit? Gravy? Hell yeah. Gonna have an “eating badly” day.

Phone might not save you as many of these areas have little cell service. Rogers satellite texting is better though. I think being prepared for unexpected, not going solo and having a plan is the best. I've encountered too many mall hikers in remote areas that are SAR cases waiting to happen

If outdoors in Victoria, even at sea level it is now bad enough smoke that you should be masking. It is expected to get CONSIDERABLY WORSE today, a level 5 on the Canadian government scale. But if you’re in a highrise, it’s already getting there. Air purifiers, mask, limited activity. #yyj

AQI reading nearest my home: 95, estimated to worsen

This is an obvious marker for totalitarianism. In totalitarian societies, anyone can be arrested at any time for reasons they don't understand and can't predict, and the resulting terror is very much an intended consequence.

I kinda wanna start blocking everyone who posts about movies/books without mentioning the name. Like, it’s not hard. The whole presuming-everyone-knows-all-of-pop-culture thing is so exhausting. For every people who asks “what’s this from?” five will have moved on with a shrug.

I have created a daisy chain of cooling. Air conditioner in the bedroom, fan by the bedroom door, my fancy Wazoo fan just outside, and it seems to be working. I have air purifiers in both rooms. That’s FIVE appliances to keep it cool and safe, but just one AC.
