OTD in 1925 John Scopes was found guilty of violating the Butler Act, a Tennessee statute that forbade the teaching of "any theory … that man has descended from a lower order of animals." Some early-career disruptive researchers may see their careers stop early. Academic careers are often about becoming increasingly specialized over time. One remains creative well beyond 40, but creativity and risk-taking are not part of the job’s core incentives or requirements, past this age.
