People are discussing how Halloween candy is so terrible these days. A reminder that alot of the candy we eat is made with women’s prison labor. Russell Stover’s factory in Kansas busses in 150 women a day via a convict leasing program to staff their candy factory.

Russell Stover has begun using prison labor to make candy in
Kansas
A Russell Stover candy factory in Kansas has begun hiring incarcerated workers through a work release program, Eoin Higgins reports in his newsletter, The Flashpoint. About 150 women are bussed in from the Topeka Correctional Facility and paid $14 an hour, but the prison keeps some of their wages for room and board, taxes, transportation, and other expenses. When all is said and done, they take home less than $6 per hour. These deductions are high, but elsewhere in the country, they're even higher: In our May series on prison

Personal will & discipline are not all it takes to manage an actual disability that places real limits on us like madness. Managing it requires treatment by a psychiatrist prescribing me medications I take & therapy. But bipolar people all learn we must be serious about routine, & use willpower.

I wish personal will was all it took to stay in balance. It can help, a lot, but it’s a big messy world, and bodyminds are complicated. I’m grateful for you, your insights, your creativity, your books. Wishing you well on your journey.

Early morning means listening to raindrops from the passing storm outside my window as they hit the ground. Hearing my dog quietly and rhythmically snore in peace on one of my shirts. Listening to honking geese pass us all by… You made it to see one more day. … Find ways to rediscover your peace.

So I know this is psychiatry not psychology, but the premise stands. I have lots of friends whose therapists don’t “get” or outright dismiss the ways racism traumatizes us. Consider that professionals are actually being prevented from learning that which might help us. White supremacy y’all…

I’m in DC scheduled to give this talk today. But the organizers flagged slides in my deck that mention racism, structural gaslighting, New Jim Code and other themes that are off limits in the Land of the Free.

Rogue and I got out for a walk yesterday. She had a blast. Much sniffing and many tail wags. I noticed a bush that has leaves like my Mexican bird of paradise. The blooms are gorgeous. I might ask this neighbor for some seed pods. The hummingbirds and bees were all over it. I want it!

Red/orange Mexican bird of paradise blooms. They flower in a loose bunch. This one had 7 blooms. A very scruffy small blue standard poodle laughs as we pause during a neighborhood walk.

Not just vile experiments and Mississippi appendectomies (forced sterilization) but there's tons of data on medical racism now -- COVID, birthing care, the lingering racisms about Black folks and pain, what isn't taught in med school, etc. and yeah, white folks-- NOT the same basis. I wonder+

So yeah it’s not the same thing when Black people are conspiratorial, because (this is true in many sectors), we have documented evidence that they are out to get us & use us in subhuman ways. White people’s medical conspiracy theories are, like their others, largely rooted in ignorance & malice.
