I can’t emphasize this enough — “AI” wasn’t born corrupt and toxic. For ~75 years, it was mathematicians and scientists doing interesting, thoughtful work and trying to solve problems, making only the usual human mistakes. What “AI” did to machine learning is as tragic as what it did to artists.
Exactly this. And in fact, many models *have* been created this way, and decades of prior machine learning systems *were* created this way, consensually. These things are choices! People are STILL working this way! It’s not just that a better world is possible — it already EXISTS. We can nurture it.

This morning a Lyft driver picked me up at a hotel, dropped me off at an airport said "have a safe flight home." I'm not going home. I was headed to my 7th hotel in a week. But it reminded me how unusual a book tour schedule is for most travelers. I'm so grateful to do it and also so tired.
Today I did a book talk and signing at a bookstore. Before it started, as people came in and took the chairs, I sat down on the floor in front of the first row to start talking to some kids. Others joined till I was chatting with four elementary age kids. Then the funniest thing happened.
