after an article i‘d written on ap came out, a guy who worked for the college board/a charter chain complained on x that i probably “loved dead poets society” (wrong) and didn’t understand that kids need “real skills” it was a genuine disagreement about what “real skills” are, what they’re for
your kids are not going to work for their kids because their kids have “critical thinking skills” from their robust liberal arts education, your kids are going to work for their kids because their kids are aiming to make $20mil by 18

this is what is happening and it is very important to articulate another vision for the good that is also what the classic learning test is doing with the classical baccalaureate—that, too, is a vision i don‘t share, but they understand the stakes

Greg Pak@gregpak.net · 3d agoAt Monday's hearing, City Councilmember Eric Dinowitz repeatedly asked an OpenAI rep if this tech would write entire essays for students and she repeatedly avoided answering. The entire company is predatory trash run by obfuscators and liars.
My @txfreedomread.bsky.social colleagues & I spent months on a long research project full of footnotes & appendices. Today we presented it to a committee we expected to be hostile but was mostly disinterested. And we did it all for free. Who says grad school doesn’t prepare you for the real world?
Tuition-free public higher education could eliminate a lot of the paperwork that makes the process confusing for teens and parents.

you don't need to write an actual essay to get a 5 on any ap exam these days

I wonder if these people devote their entire personality to pointing out things that have happened before in human history. Do they yell “this isn’t new” at the tv when the meteorologist says it’s raining.

OpenAI said the tool "offered the option to get answers because of feedback from educators — in case teenagers needed to get immediate answers to questions that might not be homework."
