We were no technology for the first 5-6ish weeks of school. The first assignment I gave them on laptops last week was very AI-esque. It’s hard to confirm, but after beautiful, original work, all the classic tells of high school work suddenly vanished

When they get back in power, Democrats need to go all-in on higher education. We need a campaign of reinvestment in public universities across the country that makes the Morrill Land-Grant Act look like nothing by comparison *and* a GI Bill of Rights-style program of tuition grants.
Trump is banning students majoring in degrees that don’t make enough money from taking out college loans. Degrees for social work, art, religious studies, teaching aides, and music will be hit the hardest. trib.al/kQdKbY1
Did anyone else sob when they finished reading East of Eden? No? Just me?
I teach AP and it was the focus of my dissertation in 2023 and SAY IT LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK 🗣️ 🗣️ 🗣️
I’m in my 14th year teaching and this year I am teaching AP, running an advanced academics program, coaching three sports (2 head, 1 assistant coach), coordinating UIL grade checks for student athletes, and trying to enjoy my life.
And that is why they are dismantling the structures for DEI in the US, particularly in education systems. Because kids were learning ideas that made it harder to turn them into genocidal drones who would look on or actively participate.
I had a conversation with a DEI professional in another country last week, and y'all know I'm a critic of DEI as a framework, but she said something while discussing where the US is on the path to genocide: The goal of DEI work is to prevent genocidal ideas from taking root.

I am wholly captivated by East of Eden. I wanted to slow-read it, but I legitimately cannot stop turning pages… this is the first “kept me up all night” book I’ve read in quite a long time.
I’ve finished Hell Bent and Angel Down…starting East of Eden, but Water is more about me taking the lessons in slowly.
These 4 books are a *must* to finish before September ends…I have 3 others that I want to get through, but they may get pushed to October
I’m overly irritated that every time I order an iced americano I have to clarify that I don’t want milk or flavor. It is a black drink by standard, so yes that’s how I want it. This is my pet peeve, ok?
I love this SMU-Florida State game with no technology. It shows who can work under adversity and who has really done the work to prepare for this game. Alignment and assignment mistakes will be glaring tonight.

I just did a whole dissertation on bias in catalogues, and here’s the thing: the more you pretend a practice is completely neutral, not only is it more biased, but those biases are harder to spot. If you think machines don’t make this all worse, I’ve got a bridge to sell you.
Not what i usually post, but I just need to say that being 36 and single and working over full time and paying for everything and doing every chore, task, and errand while getting a masters and doctorate and having surgery, and having a muscle tear is expensive and exhausting.
and yet AI adoption is rarely given as a cause of the drops in reading and literacy in the youth....
Anybody who’s still advocating putting these tools anywhere near a school is not doing so despite the cognitive collapse they cause, but because of it. dx.doi.org/10.2139/ssrn...

Back for season two with the linebackers! Never in my life did I think I’d be coaching boys football…. (I say it like that cause I also am the head coach of our girls flag team)
We’re low-tech this year, zero tolerance on AI usage. After 9 days of school we got on laptops once to write a professional email and immediately kids used AI. The only way to get students to do the work is to remove the computers. It would also help if the district didn’t have AI tools in every app
How can you sell something that’s wild? I mean … it tracks with the whole foundation of the USA, but my god it never stops.
The Trump administration is reportedly selling off thousands of wild horses, including to buyers suspected of sending them to slaughter
The corporatization (scope and sequence, scripting, data obsessing, book-length evaluation rubrics, etc.) of K-12 has greatly decreased the percent of eccentrics, however strange.
Concerned that we are losing the necessary ratio. 15% of teachers/faculty should be irretrievably strange eccentrics. Every learning experience should have some element where in later life you can reflect with former classmates about how bizarre at least one (1) class per year was.
AP has lost the plot. They lost it long ago, but this is … something
My goal this school year is to slow down. I don’t know what that looks like just yet, but I know it is a must.
