After years of trying, I've finally gotten a story accepted by Nightmare Magazine! In this sapphic dark fantasy tale set in a dying, sunless world overrun by intelligent zombies, a vampire hunts the last living human, striving to get to her and her precious blood before the zombies can.

Thomas Ha@thomasha.bsky.social · 3w agoi should clarify, when i write people doing bad things, it's because i am bad. they are me. more importantly, when you read about those bad things, they also become you. that's how story works. in fact, you are going to think about murder before this skeet ends. how's that feel, sicko.
I often think of this quote from Aristotle's Poetics w/r/t a lot of horror fiction that centers on a triumphal payback where supernatural forces exact revenge on often 1-dimensional villains standing in for real life people. I've written these stories in the past, I understand the appeal. 1/2

Writer friends, what do you consider the cutoff point between short story and novelette? I feel like 8,000 is pretty common, but to me 10,000 feels more correct.

I'm always haunted by the father-son dialogue between these two poems by poets James and Franz Wright respectively. How Franz Wright begins his poem with a Franz Wright image but closes with a contamination/homage to his father's imagery.
This is one of the rare poems I've written since moving to Texas, and another of the poems that attempts to capture the feeling of a sleepless night.
