I am a human who likes writing code. https://brettcodes.com

I wrote about why the Deno runtime was left to die, what led to those circumstances, and why Cloudflare and Ryan Dahl can and should do more to support the project in the long-term: brettcodes.com/the-disappoi... But my biggest takeaway: I'm done with VC-backed open source.

The Disappointing Death of Deno: What Happened, Why, & What's Next

A breakdown of the history of Deno, the emergence of Bun, and a reaction to the Cloudflare acquisition by a developer who went all-in on Deno years ago.

an unpublished blog post from august 2026 looks like my worries were well-founded given cloudflare acqui-hired the Deno company team and their work on the Deno runtime done except for 1 year of maintenance i feel like a sucker for having gone all in on VC-funded open source

my video about quitting using AI for coding (and everything else) passed 1 million views today, wow! what a milestone. i thought it was just gonna be a throwaway vid before i went back tomaking educational coding screencasts it has clearly resonated w/ a lot of ppl!

one of my favorite things about coding is being able to make simple, bespoke software for my needs. most recently i made a little podcast episode downloading web app! podbud is simplistic and makes it easy for me to download podcast episodes with organized filenames that i can put on my mp3 player

can we please all collectively stop saying that "ai is just a tool" it is a meaningless & oft-repeated phrase that justifies nothing & helps no one ai is an industry led by psychos, ai is chatbots, ai is agents, ai is data centers, ai is shitty features in software that doesn't need it

when i am not outlining thoughts about videos & posts in my free time, i am playing Shenmue; completely obsessed with it and the music is beautiful. here are two of my favorite screenshots Shenmue is such a unique and beautiful game, it's full of interior storytelling and slow paced in a lovely way

i wrote about how i manage my ai anxiety: brettcodes.com/how-i-naviga... i spiral a lot and having trusted people to learn from, understanding the tech more, and turning that anxiety into action has helped a lot! i thought maybe this could help others

How I navigate AI anxiety

Keeping up with AI news is exhausting, especially as a software engineer. Here's some practical advice on how to get through the anxious thoughts that can creep in.
