an excellently Modest proposal. The obvious problem with it is that tech rank-and-file have no experience with collective action. The less obvious, and bigger, problem is that the AI company’s boards/VCs would prefer to risk the end of humanity than risk the beginning of tech unions.

Even if you assume these things are both unstoppably smart (they can hack missile silos) and unbelievably stupid (they would want to hack missile silos… why?) any half-sentient entity will decide “the best way to ensure my continued existence is to brick every launcher” not actually launch them.

FWIW the reason Omarchy is getting so much support is that it's legibly taking on the project of agent-maxxing to unfuck Linux, if you wanted to starve it of resources your best bet is probably to start a competing project that is legibly more serious.

Good thread on the carbon problems with beef. I’m not quite beef-free myself but pretty close (basically I have a steak a handful of times a year), and you should be too.

Meanwhile, rewilding these pastures alone could sequester ~13Gt of CO2 per year. And if we consider that we'd be looking at about 8Gt of GHGs from business-as-usual growth of farming ruminants, that's about a 21Gt opportunity in shifting away - equivalent to more emissions than China!

There is an important distinction between lower-case effective altruism and longtermism. And most of it has to do with wanting to feel morally upstanding but not having to do hard work.

I would be less generous than “allowed elision”. longtermism was always “I accept the moral logic of EA but taking it seriously would require me to do hard thinking about Africa, politics, etc., and that doesn’t sound very fun. I just want to do scifi, how do I rationalize that.”

One of my biggest pet peeves is anti-AI folks defending almonds and beef from the standpoint that "you need food to live" even if AI never entered the equation, we were going to have to have a serious conversation about how unsustainable some of our food production is, and this mentality SUCKS

Sometimes easy to forget that lots of (d|b)oomers are eugenicists. We do need to be careful stewards of the planet, but the solution to that can't be "the correct standard of living was Berkeley in the 2010s and therefore most of the world's population should not reproduce"

Prospective copyright plaintiffs have started asking me my opinion about citing "Alignment Whack-a-Mole" in litigation. It reports that fine-tuning makes frontier LLMs reproduce up to 85-90% of copyrighted books. I don't think the headline results hold up: afedercooper.info/whack-a-mole/

This is wild: only *one quarter* of the New Yorkers who live in the city today were there on 9/11. It's basically an entirely new city. Cities are magic: constantly changing, churning engines of human progress. This is why conservatives hate them.
