One of the things I think is a sacred duty of technologists is to make the extreme edge of possible human endeavor increasingly more mundane. This has the uncomfortable side effect of making it more and more impossible to ignore, which is why many people are so mad at us.
Came back from 9 hours of traveling to a dead battery. This shit where you park your car in long term anywhere is not worth it.
My first experience with being online and unsupervised was Usenet. This was not good for me. I'm not saying I agree with all of these things, but uh, I met a bunch of people I should not have (including an infamous one) and saw bunch of things I should not have.
aegisiondure @equalnotequals.com · 15h agothis isn't very popular to say, but for me personally, it was good that i had unrestricted internet access when i was a minor. i was aware of what i was doing and enjoyed it. i don't look back on it and go "well that was a mistake", i look back on it and wish i could do it for the first time again
There are so many angles Dorian is wrong, but I just wanna point out that it could only be uttered by a man. Women's health care has gotten exponentially better over the last 40 years, in that it actually exists as a distinct research arm.

I hop off a plane and open BlueSky as I sit down to eat in the intl terminal food court. The app defaults to Discover. The discover feed has that P.H. video front and center. Fuck.

So my noodling: we see a boom of big data centers because the current demanded workload is *unusually* amenable to concentrated service. Inference is "not latency sensitive" and generally can't be precomputed. This has lead to a big campus datacenter boom, which people mistake for a global elbow.
Another great example of Zitron's narrative being so broken that even he has to walk things back, again. But now, we're gonna have some new implied financial fraud scheme. Because he's aware there is no "that's unverifiable" police in his audience.

The thing I'm trying to imagine is this actually happening enough that someone makes a resentful video about it. This seems to me like it's more mean to conditions people to be comfortable with violence towards foreign women than to actually surface a behavior.

The current BlueSky android app is riddled with bugs. This is one of the worst release I can remember. The inability to write threads is particularly ridiculous.
The thing I think about reading this is that there is a near total extinction of understanding of the underlying layers for any software system you operate, as those systems become the standard top layer.

It's absolutely insane we've somehow let the Covid recriminations debate become like "why didn't we reopen in person schools before there was a vaccine" and not "why did none of the trump guys go to jail for stealing PPE from New York hospitals in March 2020"
Thinking about this more, I wonder if folks realize how mean they are being to EEs who work in electronics. They *make electronics* but a ton of the field is fully automated. Most of the practical training is in using the modeling tools and feeding the robots. But there is a TON of theory.

It's pretty incredible that right now, an entry-level 3D printer is cheaper than all the current-gen gaming consoles on the market.
I am routinely surprised by people who do not think live translation, semantic search, and computer vision are big deals for non-knowledge workers. These just functionally did not exist 10 years ago.

I just think I'd adopt this rhetorical posture if I came into a thread hot and bothered about other people's use of language and the accidentally rejected all of typed programming because I don't understand modern compilers.

I don't care, you don't have to convince or impress me. Just stop embarrassing yourself by insisting it's still your work. You didn't make it, you commissioned it. You're a client.
This is a rejection of all modern typed programming and the cutting edge of software engineering *even excluding LLMs.* We were already generating code in 2000. We were auto generating tests, and filling typed holes over the next 20 years. It's also a rejection of metaprogramming.
