GEMA v Suno: Another landmark AI copyright case from Germany
While a lot of the attention in the AI and copyright space has gone to the hundreds of ongoing cases in the US, courts around the world have been tackling the question of copyright infringement already, with several landmark decisions taking place in Germany. We've had the LAION saga, but most importantly, the German collective society GEMA has been extremely busy litigating in this space, leading to a couple of landmark decisions, last year's…

Landscape near Rome during a Storm (ca. 1786–1806), by Simon Denis. From a selection of rainbows in art, spanning 800 years: https://publicdomainreview.org/collection/rainbows-in-art?utm_content=buffer7546f&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook.com&utm_campaign=buffer @metmuseum
Data are clear: Speed safety cameras are arguably the fastest, most effective, most affordable way to cut traffic fatalities
A story of cause and effect: Last November, Ontario banned cities from using speed safety cameras to issue tickets. Reckless speeding immediately surged in Toronto, Ottawa, Guelph, and cities throughout the province. A 🧵 about my latest in Bloomberg (gift link)
i’m back on my Terra Ignota shiiiiiiit. i believe this is our first Carlyle Rising of the series 💗💕 #booksky
The very cute cottage across the street from me, highly likely to be partially a 1906 FEMA trailer, just sold for $2.8M dollars. Completely insane.
San Francisco architectural beauty Discourse is maddening to me because people just ignore the fact that 2/3 of the city is mass-produced plywood and stucco garbage and much of the beloved Victorian housing stock in the other third is also mass produced “cookie cutter” housing.
“We can't solve a housing crisis without building more housing.” SHOUT IT FROM THE ROOFTOPS 🗣️
We can't solve a housing crisis without building more housing. Today we broke ground on the Casanova Residence, which will soon be nearly 100 affordable and supportive homes with on-site services for New Yorkers. Every new home is a step toward a City that everyone can afford.

Wrote this over the weekend: I was really worried when my parents showed up with a new Ioniq 6 lease in the middle of rural North Carolina. There aren’t many charging stations, and this was now their only car. Turns out, my worrying was for nothing. They love it. insideevs.com/features/803...
I Was Worried When My Parents Went Full EV, But They Proved Me Wrong
Even if you’re in your 70s and in Rural North Carolina, it’s not hard to live a full EV lifestyle.

Reminder that suing California cities to build more housing is good; San Francisco’s housing policy is Bad; and you can fund more such lawsuits at https://calhdf.org/donate/ https://social.coop/@luis_in_brief/117027421150254505
I have switched to a client that shows more responses by people I follow and… good lord, some of you argue way too much with randos. Touch grass.
Historical preservation I can get behind.
Today I am operating coach 8649, which is wearing a tribute livery modeled on the cream and green “wings” livery Muni vehicles would have been using 75 years ago. I am not a huge fan of how it looks in vinyl on a New Flyer, though it looks very classy on PCC Streetcars 1006 and 1008.

My cargo bike has had an @sfgiants.com black-on-orange SF flag for many years. New flag pole on the bike, but not feeling like putting the old flag back on it right now. Anyone have a lead on an 11x14 Pride Giants flag?
anyone know where these slides come from? they are so good (posted on TUMI's insta)
I’d love a good think piece from one of the Wikimedia organizational sociologists on why/how the only “thank” button *that requires confirmation* is on Wikipedia, a site that nominally loves pro-social behavior.
I use anecdotal stories about AlphaFold’s impact, alongside astronomy after the printing press, as an example of how new tech can change the day-to-day of research. In the wake of AF’s shutdown, I did a mini lit review: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AlphaFold#Reception_and_adoption

Spicy take: if your law firm has picked A Single AI Tool, and you can’t articulate why it was selected over other alternatives, you’re in violation of the Bar’s ethical requirement to understand the technology you use.
Touch some grass today, or at least touch some grass vicariously through these sheep.
Another viewpoint of Mont St Michel with sheep grazing in the foreground. This one is a fair bit further away so it's less of a commanding presence, but it always looks dreamy on the horizon. #photography #sheep #france flic.kr/p/2srVkh6
I assume all the people who said this was marketing hype will be issuing apologies, right?
NEW: When Microsoft reviewed the early results of Anthropic’s new AI model for cybersecurity, it was a sobering scene: Hundreds of bugs were identified, many of them critical. What followed was a “mad dash” to patch them — but many more remain.
If you believe that on balance California laws are some of the best pro-human-rights laws in the United States, then you have a moral obligation to help more humans live here.
This is one of the acute reasons we must build more housing in San Francisco, and California more broadly. I’d love to live in a country where trans people don’t have to flee their home states for ones with better protections, but we don’t and in the meantime we need to live up to our values here
Electricity generation is only part of California’s climate impact but still this is Good.
NEW | California just reached a world-first solar milestone Over HALF (51%) of electricity generation across the whole month of May came from solar power. Battery storage is the big difference maker, enabling California to push the share of solar generation to this level.
