Scarred For Life Books

A trilogy of books about the dark pop culture of the 1970s and 1980s, from public information films to nuclear war! Buy the books: linktr.ee/scarredforlife Patreon: bit.ly/3Rfo1Xz Contact: ste1bro@hotmail.co.uk

THE SWEENEY ANNUALS (1976-1978): Post-watershed fun with Reagan and Carter - a bullet to the groin, a double page spread of the pissed-up duo in a sweaty pub, and grimy photos. Just the thing for the little 'uns to unwrap on Christmas Day.

UNDERMIND (1965): A proper gem from the first stirrings of the Scarred For Life era. Denis Quilley, Jeremy Wilkin and Rosemary Nicols star in this subtle, cerebral alien invasion serial. The writing staff is full of Doctor Who alumni, too!

It's not often you get public information posters that become design classics, and the rabies posters of the 1970s are suitable for framing. As far as I know, no other infection was given an official, none-more-metal, logo. But the rabies logo rocks!

THE INCREDIBLY STRANGE FILM SHOW (1988): Channel 4's early years were an education. This brilliant series, hosted by an enthusiastic Jonathan Ross, introduced me to Russ Meyer, John Waters, Ed Wood, Tsui Hark, Doris Wishman, and in this episode, the Godfather of Gore, H.G. Lewis!

HOUSE OF HAMMER/HALLS OF HORROR (1976/1982): Dez Skinn's beautiful British horror mag featured bags of info and some gorgeous comic strip adaptations of Hammer films. It had a facelift in 1982, branching out into the new decade's horror films (and video nasties!)

The revived EAGLE (1982) was ostensibly the family-friendly alternative to 2000 AD. Nevertheless, it gave us the famously creepy Doomlord, dystopian nightmare The Tower King, fearsome dinosaur Bloodfang, and gritty dole drama Dolebusters!

SATURN 3 (1980): Kirk Douglas, Farrah Fawcett, Harvey Keitel (and Roy Dotrice's voice) star in this disco sci-fi horror that contained enough shocks and gruesome moments to keep 10-year old me happy. It was somehow an 'A'! The BBFC could be so lax back then...

DOCTOR WHO: DRAGONFIRE (1987) featured a brief Raiders-style face-melting scene which went out at 7.35pm. Top marks to the YouTuber who spliced the full unedited version into the original clip. Early evening gore? This is what they want!

GRANGE HILL series 6 (1983) is astonishingly great drama from start to finish. The centrepiece is school bully Gripper Stebson's transformation into a racist thug surrounded by cowardly sycophants. Hard-but-fair (mainly hard) teacher 'Bullet' Baxter is having none of it...

NEW ON PATREON! Scarred For Life Show and Tell episode 5: as voted for by the lovely Patrons, I take a page-by-page look at Volume 1 of Orbis's legendary paranormal partwork, THE UNEXPLAINED! Yes, there are spontaneous human combustion photographs. Lots of 'em. Patreon link in bio

Me and Dave Lawrence have written a second Helmet Head strip for this year's Treasury of British Comics annual, out in November! A robot sheriff in the Old West teaming up with Victorian mutant escape artist Janus Stark? Yes, please!
