I remember being told in film school to never write (beat) in dialogue to indicate a short pause. The screenwriting textbooks said it was amateur, and that you need to write (pause) instead. But then I go back and read older screenplays and (beat) is everywhere. For example, from Manhunter (1986):

Another moment from Orion's Rejects 3, coming "soon" (I promise). Spark blasts look stunningly beautiful from the receiving end, until the searing pain hits a quarter second later... Art by %20https:/www.deviantart.com/linked-memories

Every webcomic has two stories: the story the artist is telling and the meta story of watching an artist make creative choices over the course of many, many years. You get to watch art evolve and change in real time.

not to wax poetic about webcomics but I think one of the best things about webcomics is that reading them forces you to confront the fact that artists evolve and change over time, and that "style" is a necessarily evolving thing

Human Disguise/ True Form. Mijra's shapes are so different, but you can always kinda tell it's him. See if you can guess what musician I sent the artist as a reference for Human!Mijra. Art by Linked-Memories on DeviantArt
