I can’t understand why Maryland’s Montgomery County Council doubled electricity rates in county garages. After this rate hike, it costs more to drive a plug in hybrid with electricity than with gas. Why is the county council incentivizing powering hybrid plug ins with gas only? @51st.news

@51st.news today, with the AQI what it is would be a great day to run a piece on how Montgomery County increased EV charging rates from $.17 kWh to $.35 making it more affordable to operate gas vehicles than EVs. So much for MoCo’s commitment to fighting #climatechange.

I’m in Belfast for a conflict resolution practitioner workshop. Unfortunately, violence broke out the last two days here. This evening, shops are closed and streets are empty, save for police and helicopters and very few other people.

A lot of understandable caution and concern in the Caucasus this weekend, as neighboring Iran is attacked by the U.S. and Israel. All three countries here are making different strategic calculations, but the bottom line is all want good relations with both Iran and the U.S.

The DC Council is investigating the DOGE invasion of the U.S. Institute of Peace on March 17th. The DC Chief of Police has begrudgingly admitted DC MPD were called by USIP personnel at 2:59 PM, an hour before Ed Martin rang them up to help the DOGE attack.

March 31, 2025 At approximately 4:00 PM on March 17, 2025, EAC Carroll received a call from the United States Attorney’s Office – District of Columbia (USAO). Chief Carroll was told that there was at least one and possibly two individuals inside of the USIP that were refusing to leave at the request of Acting USIP President Kenneth Jackson, who was lawfully in charge of the USIP. After this call, EAC Carroll contacted Commander Tatjana Savoy of the Second District, where the building is located, to determine if she was aware of or had information concerning the incident. Chief Carroll then directed Commander Jason Bagshaw, Commander of the Special Operations Division, Homeland Security Bureau, to respond to the scene to further investigate the complaint. When Commander Bagshaw met with Acting President Jackson, Mr. Jackson stated he was in charge of the USIP, and provided a resolution from the USIP Board of Directors on USIP letterhead stating: “Be it resolved as of March 14, 2025, Mr. George E. Moose is removed from his position as USIP’s president and Mr. Kenneth Jackson is designated as USIP’s acting president with all the powers delegated by the Board of Directors to that role.” Taking this information into consideration, Commander Bagshaw determined that Mr. Jackson was lawfully in charge of the USIP and had the legal authority to determine who was allowed to remain in the building. The individuals in the building all left without incident and no arrests. ... At this time, no changes have been made to response protocol as a result of the incident. However, we are conducting an administrative investigation on a related matter. At approximately 2:59 PM, before the USAO contacted MPD, the Office of Unified Communication (OUC) received a call regarding a dispute at USIP. The caller alleged that four contract security officers were refusing to leave the premises. The OUC dispatched MPD officers...... to respond to USIP at 3:27 PM. We are actively investigating to determine if MPD members arrived at the USIP in response to the dispatch. The Council will be updated after that investigation concludes. Sincerely, Pamela A. Congress created USIP in 1984 to prevent, mitigate & resolve violent conflict. For years, it has convened some of the smartest minds & offered some of the most impactful policies. Appointing someone who wouldn't even qualify to be an intern makes a mockery of civilian protection.
