Also, in case anyone wants "kids going to magic school" that isn't HP that you can read for yourself or introduce to the kids in your life, Earthsea by Ursula K LeGuin is iconic. The Circle of Magic quartets by Tamora Pierce are really good and geared at exactly the age group HP targets.
Boycotting also reduces the odds of companies wanting to put out more related merchandise, and that in turn can lead to less public interest in the brand. The more that happens, the less influence Rowling has on public sentiment. This is why refusing to accept even free stuff can have an impact.
"JK Rowling is already a billionaire and everyone already knows about Harry Potter, what's the point of boycotting?" Nobody thinks boycotting will bankrupt her. We know she's gonna die rich. We're just asking you to show a shred of solidarity with trans folk. Absolute low bar bare minimum shit.
