It seems like this was quite accurate. The UK but also Switzerland are now in an awkward position vis-a-vis market access to the US. This creates potential for demands for stronger EU market integration that businesses may favor owing to the perceived improved predictability...

I have so many questions...
One mantra I keep repeating to my peeps is the observation that, IMO, the service sector part of the economy is entirely malleableโฆ much easier than the physical economy.
I do have a reaction to the article on Daron Acemoglu in The Economist, but I always think it is more sensible to be "a bit late". There is something substantive to be said, and it has little to do with Daron's work, but speaks to the phenomena he may be perceived to represent...
Delighted to see the @nuffieldfoundation.org funding our real-time work to understand how firms are responding to the ongoing energy supply disruptions and what this means for the wider economy. This is joint work with @trfetzer.com, @christinavpalmou.bsky.social and @iyotzov.bsky.social. 1/2
'Who bears the 2026 energy shock? Real-time UK firm and price evidence' led by Jakob Schneebacher (@theifs.bsky.social)
This is interesting and very much aligned with suggestions I had raised with some research organizations. Curiosity-led research can be highly problematic with convex returns in attention markets, and a culture that rewards output visibility. It is this vector through which...

Just so incredibly concerning... the "replacements" are not coping, expect major felling and collateral damage across most parks in not too long. There is also concern around further soil degradation. It has happened before.
Very relevant paper, and one may add that is why perceived (in) security (possibly legacy trauma induced) across different socioeconomic strata is so important. This can create varieties of what I refer to as unholy electoral coalitions between groups across the income distributionโฆ.
More of this -- only if we cultivate norms that regard failures as valuable will make progress. This is how knowledge accumulates. As an aside: we also need fewer survey experiments. At the moment, we have a misallocation of effort/resources. See also these slides by Macartan Humphreys.

Technically if these guys are competent this is a huge opportunity for the Mittelstand and many tradespeople and smaller companies that are dealing with the generational handover of the boomer generation. A pilot match making should be considered, human embeddings anyone?
Always wonder what determines the choice of color gradient... this most certainly visually does not emphasize the vast differences in heat-stress induced excess mortality.
NEW: The current energy crisis has so far affected fewer firms than in 2022, new evidence shows. ๐ @trfetzer.com, @christinavpalmou.bsky.social, @jschneebacher.bsky.social & @iyotzov.bsky.social show that exposed firms responded in the first two months mainly with increased prices and inventories:
What folks donโt realize is that this will create a demand for auditable authenticity and trusted verification services/provenance โ which may imply a fundamentally different societal architecture. It is also a question to what extent this is a shared endeavor between societies or unilateralism.
Google Earth, a tool often used as a source of satellite imagery to verify photos and videos, has added a feature that allows you to alter satellite imagery with AI, for reasons. blog.google/products-and...
New paper in @jeeanews.bsky.social with @martinezluis.bsky.social! Fiscal rules have quietly become a central feature of local governments around the world. But do they improve government or simply impose politically costly austerity? We study one such reform in Colombia. ๐งต sl1nk.com/zs0m0a4

It is looking incredibly bad... a cry for help.
The UK/EU/US love triangle sees some more tension, push and pulls.
How can we give policymakers the timely, causal, granular evidence they need to respond to crises as they unfold? A short thread on our updated working paper with @trfetzer.com, @christinavpalmou.bsky.social and @iyotzov.bsky.social.
Many modern physical products are over-complex for basic tasks and under-engineered for failure recovery. Incentives to create moats, lock in and recurrent revenues are the driver restricting choice & competition. More competition is not the answer, a renewed social contract is.
It should be obvious that, if behavioral targeting, exploitation of behavioral biases/cognitive limitations prevails, then only a "crowd stochastic noise" revolution can help rebalance power in economies. That is: we need to add more random choices in our day-to-day life.
