In 1933, Justice Louis Brandeis said: “We can have democracy in this country or we can have great wealth concentrated in the hands of the few, but we cannot have both.” What he said was true 93 years ago. It’s even more accurate today. Let us choose democracy over oligarchy.

My grandparents survived the terrible abuse of the Federal Indian Boarding School Era. That trauma wasn't isolated to the past—it was carried down through my family all the way to me. And there are so many families like my own across Indian Country.

Found this one in the family album. That's me, growing up in Western Alaska. Some of my earliest memories are of summers at fish camp and a community that always looked out for one another. That Alaska is worth fighting for. I'm running for Senate to protect it for the next generation.

Britain's farmers are facing an increasingly uncertain future. After a summer of extreme drought and falling yields, food security is becoming a national concern. Farmer Martin Lines explains why protecting nature and producing food must go hand in hand. @eastangliabylines.co.uk

I don’t agree with Wab Kinew on this. Residential school denialism is racist and deeply hurtful. And those who promote it are engaging in hate speech. Education does matter, but we cannot be tolerant of those who deny the abuse and deaths at residential schools. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Navi Pillay’s Nobel Peace Prize celebrates a trailblazing, tireless woman of courage & conviction. And it sends a timely message that in our turbulent, divided & violent world, it is to human rights norms, global institutions of justice & core precepts of the rule of law that we must turn.

More and more conflicts are being addressed through diplomacy, treaties and legal mechanisms, rather than threats, violence and warfare. International law is a foundation for a more peaceful world.

At a time of existential challenges – including more wars and conflicts than the world has seen in a long time – international law is no longer just a supplement to peace and security. It is an absolute necessity. #NobelPeacePrize

In awarding this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, the Norwegian Nobel Committee wants to remind the world that the rule of law – national and international – underpins the system we have set up to ensure peace and resolve conflicts non-violently. Peace requires justice.

History has shown that a world operating without the rule of law is unjust, unwise and inhumane. The judges – those who guard the thin red line between order and chaos – are therefore highly deserving of our praise.

But today, as these same judges are sanctioned, and their institutions are attacked, we need people of courage, vision and determination – qualities that 2026 peace laureate Navi Pillay demonstrates in her work on the bench.

Green Day’s “American Idiot” LP hits #1 today in 2004 — an album Billie Joe Armstrong said he wrote after watching TV journalists broadcast live, as US tanks entered Iraq. “.. It felt like a cross between war & reality television,” he said. “I just felt .. like, someone needs to say something.”
