Begin to believe… the next Queer Cut screening I’m hosting is this Saturday night, playing a very rarely screened archival print of THE MATRIX as part of the Heights Theater’s centennial series Saturday, October 3rd Curated preshow at 9:10 pm Intro from yours truly at 9:30 pm

𝕃𝕚𝕗𝕖 𝕙𝕒𝕕 𝕔𝕠𝕞𝕖 𝕥𝕠 𝕒 𝕙𝕒𝕝𝕥... Chantal Akerman’s JE TU IL ELLE (1974) is a landmark in queer, experimental, and feminist film. Its light plot and loose narration highlight a woman separating from herself in the wake of lost love. (links in 🧵) #filmsky #movies #podcast

I’ve been stoked for months to hear Abbie talk about this film from one of her all-time fave directors at length, and the day has finally come!! Tune in and listen to my very smart wife talk about a lovely movie!

𝘐𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘥𝘢𝘺𝘴, 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨. We were all pretty gobsmacked by THE LONG DAY CLOSES (1992). It replaces a plot with feelings-as-memory. While we were lost in reverie, @abbiememorydoll.bsky.social helped us figure out what makes Terence Davies' not-musical so special! (links in 🧵)

Be afraid… be very afraid. David Cronenberg’s body horror classic THE FLY screens at the Heights Theater on Saturday, Sept. 26th as part of my series Queer Cut Curated preshow begins at 9:20 pm, followed by an intro from me and the feature presentation at 9:45 pm Come watch Seth Brundle change 🪰

Through it all, he was the nicest, coolest guy. Just so stoked to be working with us. It was surreal. I don't wanna oversell it or be weird about it, but it was probably the best week of my life. I love Japanese movies so damn much. It all felt like a dream. I've loved making this so much.

A bit about this: Tsukamoto invited us into his archive last October after about a year of dreaming and concepting with him. Everything was open to us: nearly 50 years of vital (no pun intended!) Japanese and independent film history. Some photos I dug up from that trip.

𝐼'𝑙𝑙 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑣𝑒 𝐼 𝑐𝑎𝑛 𝑏𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑒 𝑎 𝑚𝑎𝑛. For our 400th episode, we're proving we're men by discussing the movie we covered back in our first one: THE 400 BLOWS (1959)! And having some silly fun along the way! You know how much we like that! (links in 🧵) #filmsky #movies #podcast

𝕎𝕒𝕤𝕟'𝕥 𝕪𝕠𝕦𝕣 𝕠𝕨𝕟 𝕤𝕚𝕟 𝕣𝕖𝕕 𝕖𝕟𝕠𝕦𝕘𝕙? Anthony Perkins sat in the director’s chair for just one PSYCHO movie — and boy, he rode it HARD. @kransekage.bsky.social, the biggest Perkins fan we know, joins for PSYCHO III (1986), his beautiful, sleazy entry in the franchise that made him famous! (links in 🧵)

𝚆𝚑𝚘 𝚔𝚗𝚘𝚠𝚜 𝚒𝚏 𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚢 𝚌𝚊𝚖𝚎 𝚝𝚘 𝚕𝚒𝚏𝚎… 𝚘𝚛 𝚒𝚏 𝚠𝚎 𝚍𝚒𝚎𝚍 𝚏𝚘𝚛 𝚊 𝚗𝚒𝚐𝚑𝚝. Spooky, Spanish, and salacious, EL FANTASMA DEL CONVENTO (1934) is a film that could've only come in the time between the Mexican Revolution and World War II. (links in 🧵) #filmsky #movies #podcast

𝘔𝘢𝘺𝘣𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘸𝘦 𝘥𝘪𝘦, 𝘸𝘦'𝘭𝘭 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘢 𝘩𝘰𝘮𝘦. EL NORTE (1983) won acclaim for its harrowing depiction of the refugee experience, following two siblings fleeing civil war in Guatemala for a new life in the USA. (links in 🧵)

𝕆𝕣 𝕖𝕝𝕤𝕖 𝕚𝕥'𝕝𝕝 𝕟𝕖𝕧𝕖𝕣 𝕘𝕖𝕥 𝕗𝕚𝕩𝕖𝕕. THE HOLE (1998) was Tsai Ming-liang's vision of the year 2000: A time when people would be so smashed together, they became lonelier than ever. Good thing we avoided THAT, right? Check out today's episode! (links in 🧵)

Really can't recommend this documentary highly enough. Punches through any kind of cynicism or, honestly, justifiable moral concerns you may have about it going in and shows you something that feels timelessly urgent and galvanizing. Ending homelessness should be all anyone is ever thinking about

𝙒𝙚 𝙡𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙤𝙙𝙖𝙮. COOLEY HIGH (1975) influenced a generation of artists, from Spike Lee and John Singleton to Boyz II Men, because of its delicate balance between fun hangout vibes and "capital-I issues." Check out our latest episode! (links in 🧵) #filmsky #movies #podcast

So incredibly happy with how this incredibly stupid and incredibly evil episode of the podcast came out I love having dear friends on the podcast and then surprising them with an elaborate bit like “me and Violet will be in character as the hosts of X-Play the entire time we’re recording”
