“Similarly, the term "Islamophobia" is structurally flawed. By framing the issue as an irrational ‘phobia’ or fear, it medicalises what is in reality a form of bigotry and discrimination.” I’ve heard this one so often about homo/transphobia. It doesn’t get better with time.

"... the modern use of the term “antisemitism” to refer exclusively to hostility against Jews distorts its original meaning and erases the Semitic identity of Arabs and Palestinians." This gem is from an early draft resolution of "Zionism is Racism" Green party resolution

Since it needs to be said: Anti-Islamic bigotry and anti-Arab racism are very real and deserve to be named and studied and confronted on their own terms. But "antisemitism" never meant "bigotry against Semitic peoples," and saying so is bad historiography.

Nidal Hasan's execution date was set, which brought the case back to mind. As a criminal law professor, it raises uncomfortable questions. In particular, it feels like he would have a decent argument for the defence of necessity, at least under Canadian standards.

Fascinating argument from Jacob Wright’s Why the Bible Began: You don’t understand, the Levitical material isn’t some navel-gazing exercise by priests, it’s editors making their secret handbook public to turn them into public servants.

back in the pre-marriage equality era I once heard a close friend from church earnestly say to someone “I just can’t understand why gay people want to DESTROY my marriage by redefining the meaning of it” I’ll remember the way she said the word “destroy” until the day I die, because she meant it

one of the deepest sicknesses in the world are the people who feel personally attacked over other people getting the same rights as them
