We successfully concluded our third annual RUTA Conference. Over four days, we shared ideas about the power of knowledges embedded in our communities, experienced radically decolonial art installations, and strengthened a community committed to reclaiming knowledge-making on the RUTA region(s).
Here’s to the RUTA gathering and its unparalleled atmosphere; to the multigenerational, transregional communities we’ve been building; to old & new friendships fostered in Ukraine at war time; and to generations of resistance, solidarities, and shifts in learning, understanding, and knowledge-making
What a week it has been! Over four days, #RUTA2026 brought together more than 200 participants, including in-person and online attendees, artists, partners, volunteers, and members of the organzing team. Photo by Tetiana Kizenko.

What started as endless zoom meetings between (almost) strangers united by a common vision of academia has grown into something beyond our wildest dreams.
The first day of this year's conference welcomed participants with a powerful talk by Nobel Laureate Oleksandra Matviichiuk, followed by a meet and greet section where participants and organizers alike got the chance to finally gather in person and engage in meaningful conversation.
just attended my best panel online, middle of the night where I am, people gathering at RUTA in Ukraine & almost all my co-panelists joining from different sides of the world. Yet we speak of the same pain, of the same embodied knowledges and of the type of violence shared across and beyond borders
Day 2: Today a third featured panel is taking place: “How Do We Make Art in Times of Violence: Between Positionality and Solidarity”. The discussion turns around the question of how can art challenge imperial ways of seeing rather than reproduce them?

Day 1: Onto the second featured panel of the day! : "Beyond Troll Farms and Border Violence: Defying Disinformation and Dehumanization." Alongside its colonial aggression against Ukraine, Russia has been tightening its grip on Africa through a combination of military and hybrid tactics.
Day 1: We are very excited to be coming to you from our first featured panel! : “Rooted and Environmental Knowledges" The panel is bringing together scholars and practitioners working across the RUTA region(s).
