The Health and Social Care Select Committee released a report into the cost of inaction on social care last year. Last week, in light of Andy Burnham's announcement, I spoke to Matt Chorley on 5 Live about the social, moral and economic cost of doing nothing to fix this issue. buff.ly/LLyycP7

I was pleased to hear in Andy Burnham's announcement that Baroness Casey's review would be brought forward, this is something which the Health and Social Care Select Committee have asked for.

The social care system is currently a horrible lottery where 1 in 7 of us will pay more than £100,000 on the cost of our adult social care. It is grotesque how we let families down when they are most vulnerable. (1/2)

Andy Burnham has been talking about Social Care a lot. We've had 22 reviews since 1997; it's time for action. In a recent committee session on Social Care, I pressed Baroness Casey and then Minister Stephen Kinnock to report earlier.

Andy Burnham is right to say that reform of social care is going to take more than a couple of years to solve. You can however lay the foundations for reform and achieve cross party consensus ahead of the next General Election. (1/2)

The Prime Minister is completely right to say that we will only solve the problem of social care with cross party consensus. Ed Davey and the Liberal Democrats advocated for this at the last election. (1/2)

At the start of this Parliament, the Health and Social Care Select Committee published a report detailing the cost of inaction on social care. Whilst reform of the social care system will take some reallocation of resource, doing nothing costs more. (1/2)

There is a moral imperative to reform Adult Social Care. There are over 4 million unpaid carers in this country who provide care equivalent to a second NHS. I am pleased to see that Andy Burnham is willing to spend political capital to fix this issue, but it will be difficult. (1/2)

One of the recommendations of the food environment report is Healthy Start Card's which support families on lower incomes to make healthier choices. We are calling on the Government to ensure that these can be used universally across supermarkets and that the amounts rise with food inflation.

This week I led a debate in the House of Commons on the UK/US pharmaceutical deal. The Government are still yet to answer where the money is going to come from to fund the extra spending on medicines and whether or not other NHS services will be affected.

If building of the E1 settlement goes ahead, then the prospect of a Palestinian state disappears. We have a small window to affect what happens before the upcoming Israeli elections.

It was a privilege to speak at the General Medical Council's Parliamentary reception yesterday evening. The GMC do vital regulatory work to support good, safe care for patients across the UK.

Getting the accountability and culture right in wards, as well as ensuring women's voices are heard, were key to Baroness Amos' recommendations to improve maternity services. We need action now, and that is why I will be sitting on one of the expert reference groups to feed into this change.

The Amos review into maternity services highlights the heart breaking experience of the families and staff who access maternity services. This is a national issue which will require government level leadership to allow for the root and branch reform of maternity services which we need to see.

Sleeping rough is not a lifestyle choice. After years campaigning, tirelessly led by @laylamoran.bsky.social, we are glad the government has finally repealed the Vagrancy Act. We must now focus on tackling the root causes of homelessness, not scapegoating the victims of it.
