Assessment tools are always a narrow view into performance but when it comes to skills that are achieved in context-sensitive ways, like being an effective communicator, they can cause problems.
A friend and I were discussing post op experiences - why is it that you are shouted at to wake up post anesthesia?
Is communication a soft skill? This is an idea that I have been challenging for years. Check out the Bedside Manners blog for more: www.bedsidemanners.com.au/blog/communi...
I appreciate that Dolly Parton refused to participate in "dress respectability" and, by her own account, modeled her aesthetic after a town "tramp," who she thought was beautiful. She separated aesthetics from character and understood "classiness" to be about how you treat people, not how you dress.
Just the other day I popped on the movie Dumplin' on in the background while doing some life admin. I've seen it enough not to watch it. I'm going to re-watch it properly. It's got a Dolly Parton soundtrack and characters in it are fans. If you haven't watched it, you definitely should.
Imagine if more wealthy people understood that they could help people and STILL be wealthy. These people don’t experience shame, but her example *should* shame them. People far richer than she was.
One of my favourite Dolly Parton stories. Chatting to one of her employees one day, she asked why he’d decided to work at Dollywood. To fund his education, he said. She immediately paid 100% of his college fees & then offered the same deal to all 11,000 employees. www.upworthy.com/dollywood-co...
Imagine writing Jolene and I Will Always Love You on the same day and that's not the best thing you did in life.
The Library is devastated to learn of the passing of Dolly Parton, a music legend and titan of children's literacy. Her Imagination Library program has earned multiple Library Literacy Awards and, in 2018, she visited us to donate its 100 millionth book to our collection and host a story time. 🦋❤️
A few months ago I had surgery and was provided with some conflicting discharge information. Naturally, I provided an analysis and recommendations to my surgeon at my follow up appointment.

Over the years I’ve been asked to provide advice to or to make resources for patients numerous times. Yet, I’ve generally avoided it because it’s part of the professional role of a clinician to be an effective communicator. BUT…

Sometimes I get comments about why Bedside Manners, my training and research company, offers a module that's introductory since "we've learnt all this before". Chances are, you haven't.
Often policies and guidelines around communication are well-intentioned but don't offer practical strategies of how to implement within a conversation as it unfolds. This is one such example: www.bedsidemanners.com.au/blog/communi...

I decided to write a blog post to share with my child's high school as they were keen to know more after I let them know about the issues with claims about non-verbal communication. This blog mostly links to some resources about how conversations works. www.bedsidemanners.com.au/blog/introdu...

New strategy for selling my online modules on conversation?
I hate how what I need to do is write books, and yet I keep thinking, "Maybe if I wore increasingly weird glasses and sat in front of my taxidermy with a bubble pipe and did unhinged houseplant reviews I could go viral and sell some books." Doing the work doesn't feel like enough, some days.
One thing i think we need to be clear on is that the “nine years” is almost entirely getting Drs to take us seriously. These tests need to be cheap and easily available enough that Drs are incentivised to use them very widely, or else the actual issue will continue.
Endometriosis takes nine years to diagnose. That’s about to change. NICE has approved two tests: a saliva test reading microRNA markers, and a gut-sensor test returning results in 45 minutes, sparing women the keyhole surgery currently needed. buff.ly/QX3jHk8 #ShareGoodNewsToo
