This should be really good! Wiggins has a talent for clear, sharp and entertaining writing, and is probably the world's authority on social interaction around meal times and other occasions when people eat together.

Fascinating to hear that people use 300 words per day fewer between 2005 & 2019. But it doesn't quite mean that we've lost 300 x 365 days x 14 years = 1.5 million words each. (!) Not if it's the same 300 words.

Clip from Pfeifer & Mehl 2026: … The participants arranging an age from 10 to 94, were part of 22 studies conducted over the span of 14 years and resided mostly in the United States as well as Mexico Australia and Europe. The report yield an estimate for the average number of spoken words per day at 12,792 an estimate noticeably lower than normal prior study from 2007 yield it using the same method… bar relate in the aspens of participants daily spoken words to the year that it was collected we discovered that for each year between 2005 and 2019 an average of 338 fewer words be spoken per day… At first glance 300 also words seem like a small insignificant l but as tribute 338 were today may feel the loss of these daily spoken words unavoidably adds up.
