Today would be Carl Ladner’s 149th Birthday, without whom there would likely be no Cohasset Punch. Though he didn’t create it, he successfully brought the brand back after Prohibition and installed the famous neon “Home of Cohasset Punch” sign on Madison St. which was a local landmark for decades.

Schlitz has been my go-to beer since 2008. Folks who knew me during my four years in NYC heard way too much about my quest to find the few bars there that carried it.

Sad about Schlitz beer being discontinued. Here’s a 1966 photo of Madison St. at Wells in Chicago, a Schlitz sign behind the landmark Cohasset Punch bar (courtesy David Sadowski/The Trolley Dodger). Cohasset Punch got revived; maybe Schlitz can be too—but hopefully it won’t also take 40 years.

Today is a bit of a solemn anniversary in Cohasset Punch world — #OnThisDay exactly 40 years ago, the old Cohasset Punch tavern in the Chicago loop closed. Cohasset Punch could still be found in liquor stores for a few more years (before our revival in 2024), but it was definitely the end of an era.

If you order a “rail” drink at a bar, is this what you get? Back in the mid-1930s, Chicago’s famed Cohasset Punch could be had in the “Tip Top Tap” cars of the Hiawatha trains of the Milwaukee Road. Now that Cohasset Punch has returned, we’re waiting on that call from @amtrak.com...

Managing the Cohasset Punch business page on Instagram is cool, because I’ll get a notification and assume somebody interacted with or commented on one of my posts. Instead, it’s just HERE’S A POST YOU MIGHT LIKE ON *THREADS* and the post in question is like “Sandwiches are dope 🤣🤣”
