I really appreciate the work of Dr. Poi Sonai. I think he really pushes the public understanding of AI and LLMs. Endless battle, though

Metaresearcher in open science (STS & Scientometrics). Epistemic aspects about RDM (NFDI) and research software. My PhD is about reporting standards in biomedical research & PRISMA for systematic reviews. Fedi is the best place and we all know it ;-)
This is a great piece of research that can be adapted to test the #accessibility of all these digital services academia is churning out these days…
🌐 How accessible are preprint services and where are they located? That is the question addressed by this article evaluated by MetaROR. The two reviewers are generally positive, though they have some notes on some of the figures and would like to see more statistical tests. 👇 Read it now
Oh man that feeling when you tweak you matching algorithm in #Rstats to handle 500 million comparisons more efficiently and it results in 6000 hits…
What happened to goodreports.org? Imagine building a research tool, even writing a paper about it (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...), only to have the site taken by a gambling site. Embarassing! Better own the domains by yourself... #OpenScience #Transparency #Metascience

I just came back from a workshop with Nancy Cartwright at Bielefeld‘s #ISOS institute. It was about reforming the #SystematicReview method to incorporate more diverse knowledge. Very refreshing to (re)join the current debate, even thought am not fully convinced...
Oh wow this is so astonishingly incomplete! Why does it not mention history/philosophy/sociology of science, STS etc. - relevant fields without normative agenda. What about reflexive metrics and critical evaluation studies which are so fundamental for current assessment reform debate?

So, naive question about these campuses that pay OpenAI $13mil/yr. Why don’t they pour that money into a cluster running the strongest available open-weight model, with API and interactive options. And if the answer is “overhead,” why aren’t we collaborating?
#PhDone What a day and what a great way to celebrate the end of my long journey. Many thanks to everyone who was part of this journey! I still have to process everything. #Dissertation @academic-chatter.bsky.social #AcademicLife #AcademicChatter @cwts.nl @unileiden.bsky.social #DZHW
Late but still trying to watch part of the dissertation defense by @aschniedermann.bsky.social a former colleague at @bibliometrie-info.bsky.social ... Very articulated answers to pretty sharp questions, well done Alex (so far, I had to disconnect to attend another meeting)...

Here is a prediction: Rather than banning anything, we will find ourselves forced to play along and use more AI for writing too. In the end, everyone will enjoy being a scholar a little less (again).
Is research funding facing an "agentic" collapse? In @nature.com today, RoRI’s @jameswilsdon.bsky.social & @profgeraintrees.bsky.social warn that AI agents are overwhelming a system built for a pre-AI world. We need AI-native funding, not unenforceable bans. Read the piece: tinyurl.com/mtxpcf7k
Digital #TragedyOfTheCommons: Scholars who announce the publication of their recent paper on more or less public email lists. This behavior is selfish and worsens the experience for everyone.
Important finding and hint at what I argue for years: People are not stupid and they don't want to be considered stupid. But all the ELIF / "spare the details" - vibe does exactly that!

I don't know about all the nuances of the word "Annals" in English. But "Annalen" is a very big word in colloquial German which makes it quite entertaining when #predatoryJournals choose names like "Annals of Case Reports".

I just published my first paper on MetaROR (MetaResearch Open Review). The #PublishReviewCurate model brings reviewing and editorial decision making into the open. To me, it can become a real game changer in #ScholarlyCommunication. I got great reviews and look forward to revise my manuscript!

Let's develop a theory about how methodological developments in research are motivated by the evergrowing urge to not leave the lab and not having social interactions.
Can large language models stand in for human participants? Many social scientists seem to think so, and are already using "silicon samples" in research. One problem: depending on the analytic decisions made, you can basically get these samples to show any effect you want. THREAD 🧵
Haha, this Springer certificate for #PeerReview is cute. However, I haven't found out where to put my IBAN... 🧐
I am in the final phase of editing my dissertation and wonder if I should add - [ ] decrease amount of references to Ioannidis' papers to the editing todo list. And yes, citation is politics!
#STS and #SociologyOfScience have shown how contextually nuanced and discursive forms of argumentation are not integral to the sciences/medicine. At the same time we criticize the strong and reductive language found in #Metascience and #ScienceReform. I think we should be less surprised!
Did you know Bluesky's founder has an #STS degree? In a new article, Erin Burkett and I explain why, despite current threats to humanities and social science, "STEM-in-Society programs" like STS are more important than ever. And we guide funders and university leaders how to better support them.

Sometimes I have the impression I am the only one in #bibliometrics who cares about "measurement error", especially when apply traditional statistics. But I get that the assumption is often: big data averages out any bias. It tells much about the epistemology of #DataScience and #BigData
