I'll be a panelist tomorrow on possible new trends in Serbian foreign policy under the incoming government. And that will have to start with recap of foreign policy within the autocratic turn, and the long-term trends that also inform the Student List program. www.isac-fund.org/en/event/ser...

That it is/was a bank used by Russian expats and refugees in Serbia is really mislabelling what it primarily was - a private, SNS party favourite bank, pushed into countless deals with state and public institutions to siphon off as much money as possible towards the priviliged few.

Alta Banka, a private bank in Serbia closest to the former ruling SNS party, lost its operating licence today, in a swift action by the National Bank to, most likely, stop the money drain by the outgoing elite. The funny part - the NB governor is still a high-ranking member of the SNS.

Aleksandar Vučić has just conceded to the Student List, which will have an absolute majority of MPs, 135-140 out of 250.
Very early results suggest a clear win by the Student List, 5-10 percentage points head to head with the SNS.

Absolutely record-breaking turnout in the early hours of parliamentary elections in #Serbia. ❤️ Good indicator for the final turnout and the score of the opposition Student List.
Police forces and party thugs are deploying around the Republic’s Electoral Commission. Record turnout is a strong indicator of opposition win, and if so we are left guessing whether the SNS will accept the defeat or will it use dirty tricks, state capture, or violence to prolong its stay in power.

In the final stretch this now seems like an irresistible force…
"Thousands of people gather in Belgrade in support of Serbia’s #student movement...The Balkan nation goes to the polls on Sunday, with a student-backed election list posing the biggest challenge to the ruling Serbian Progressive Party of former president Aleksandar Vucic", reports @en.afp.com

A WWII era bomb (Luftwaffe’s SC250, with ~130kgs of explosives) had to be exploded in place at a construction site in downtown Belgrade this morning. Few hundred nearby residents were removed from their homes for several hours, just in case. youtu.be/7-NZZSlfA0Q?...

A slap to the face of the EU enlargement policy as a whole, I'm afraid.
Icelanders have voted against resuming EU accession talks: 52.8% No to 47.2% Yes, on an 82.5% turnout. A close result and the questions raised by this campaign will not disappear.
The announcement by Serbian authorities that Ratko Mladić might be buried with the highest state honours "represents an unacceptable act of institutional glorification of a man convicted by a final judgement of genocide"... 1/2

Large scale historical datasets are very hard to come by. Historical research is often about pulling scraps of different things together to make sense of it all. Historical primary sources can be considered *traces* of the past, because so much stuff goes unrecorded.
